Abstract

Facilitating analysis is disclosed. A master track comprising one or more previously recorded inputs to one or more computer system components is played. Two or more sets of instrument output are received, each set generated during at least a corresponding portion of the playback of the master track. At least a selected portion of the instrument output is displayed in a manner that allows visual correlation of the displayed instrument output.

Claims (32)

1. A method of facilitating analysis comprising:

playing a master track comprising one or more previously recorded inputs to one or more computer system components, wherein playing the master track includes providing at least one of the previously recorded inputs as a current input to an executing computer software being analyzed;

receiving two or more sets of instrument output, each set generated during at least a corresponding portion of the playback of the master track, wherein an instrument gathers information associated with a computer resource and a set of instrument output associated with the instrument includes one or more outputs generated by the instrument in response to an input of a least one of the previously recorded inputs to the executing computer software; and

displaying at least a selected portion of the instrument output in a manner that allows visual correlation of a displayed first portion of a first set of instrument output with one or both of a displayed corresponding portion of a second set of instrument output and a displayed corresponding portion of the master track.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising recording the master track.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving an instrument selection.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising configuring an instrument.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving a definition of a pre-selected set of instruments.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving a selection of a pre-selected set of instruments.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the instrument output is displayed correlated with at least a portion of the one or more previously recorded inputs and their corresponding times.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the instrument output is displayed as if rendered with one or more brushes.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying a detailed view of at least a portion of the instrument output.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the instrument output comprises an event.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying event information.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the instrument output is stored in an event database.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the two or more sets of instrument output include two or more sets of output data generated by the same instrument during successive runs of the master track.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the two or more sets of instrument output include two or more sets of output data generated by two or more different instruments during a run of the master track.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the two or more sets of instrument output include two or more sets of output data generated by two or more different instances of the same instrument during a run of the master track.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving a selection of the selected portion of the instrument output.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising correlating the instrument output based at least in part on time.

18. The method of claim 1 further comprising correlating the instrument output based at least in part on a timestamp.

19. The method of claim 1 further comprising correlating the two or more sets of instrument output based on event information associated with each of the sets of instrument output.

20. A computer system comprising:

a display; and

a processor coupled to the display and configured to:

play a master track comprising one or more previously recorded inputs to one or more computer system components, wherein the processor is configured to play the master track including by providing at least one of the previously recorded inputs as a current input to an executing computer software being analyzed;

receive two or more sets of instrument output, each set generated during at least a corresponding portion of the playback of the master track, wherein an instrument gathers information associated with a computer resource and a set of instrument output associated with the instrument includes one or more outputs generated by the instrument in response to an input of a least one of the previously recorded inputs to the executing computer software; and

cause at least a selected portion of the instrument output to be rendered in the display in a manner that allows visual correlation of a displayed first portion of a first set of instrument output with one or both of a displayed corresponding portion of a second set of instrument output and a displayed corresponding portion of the master track.

21. A computer program product for performing analysis, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions for:

playing a master track comprising one or more previously recorded inputs to one or more computer system components, wherein playing the master track includes providing at least one of the previously recorded inputs as a current input to an executing computer software being analyzed;

receiving two or more sets of instrument output, each set generated during at least a corresponding portion of the playback of the master track, wherein an instrument gathers information associated with a computer resource and a set of instrument output associated with the instrument includes one or more outputs generated by the instrument in response to an input of a least one of the previously recorded inputs to the executing computer software; and

displaying at least a selected portion of the instrument output in a manner that allows visual correlation of a displayed first portion of a first set of instrument output with one or both of a displayed corresponding portion of a second set of instrument output and a displayed corresponding portion of the master track.
