Abstract

Methods of selecting a number of channels out of a multiplicity of channels of an implantable neural stimulation system for stimulation during a stimulation frame include obtaining a threshold corresponding to the stimulation frame, determining an amplitude corresponding to each channel within the multiplicity of channels, comparing the amplitude corresponding to each of the channels within the multiplicity of channels to the threshold, and selecting each of the channels having amplitudes that exceed the threshold for stimulation during the stimulation frame.

Claims (43)

1. A method of selecting a number of channels out of a multiplicity of channels of an implantable cochlear stimulation system for stimulation during a stimulation frame, said method comprising:

obtaining a threshold corresponding to said stimulation frame;

determining an amplitude corresponding to each channel within said multiplicity of channels;

comparing said amplitude corresponding to each of said channels within said multiplicity of channels to said threshold; and

selecting, by a speech processor included within the implantable cochlear stimulation system, each of said channels having amplitudes that exceed said threshold for stimulation during said stimulation frame;

wherein if a total number of said selected channels is greater than a predetermined number, said method further comprises randomly de-selecting one or more of said selected channels until said total number of said selected channels is equal to said predetermined number.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein if a total number of said selected channels is greater than a predetermined number, said threshold is increased for a subsequent stimulation frame.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein if a total number of said selected channels is less than a predetermined number, said threshold is decreased for a subsequent stimulation frame.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said step of determining said amplitude of said multiplicity of said channels comprises determining an amplitude of a multiplicity of stimulation signals corresponding to said multiplicity of said channels.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more stimulation signals are applied to a patient via said channels selected for stimulation during said stimulation frame.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said multiplicity of channels comprises a total number of channels of said implantable neural stimulation system.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said implantable neural stimulation system comprises an implantable cochlear stimulation system.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said implantable neural stimulation system comprises at least one or more of a spinal cord stimulation system and a deep brain stimulation system.

9. A method of selecting a number of channels out of a multiplicity of channels of an implantable cochlear stimulation system for stimulation during a stimulation frame, said method comprising:

obtaining a threshold corresponding to said stimulation frame;

determining an amplitude corresponding to each channel within said multiplicity of channels;

comparing said amplitude corresponding to each of said channels within said multiplicity of channels to said threshold; and

selecting, by a speech processor included within the implantable cochlear stimulation system, each of said channels having amplitudes that exceed said threshold for stimulation during said stimulation frame;

wherein if a total number of said selected channels is greater than a predetermined number, said method further comprises de-selecting a number of channels having a highest frequency among said selected channels.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein if a total number of said selected channels is greater than a predetermined number, said threshold is increased for a subsequent stimulation frame.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein if a total number of said selected channels is less than a predetermined number, said threshold is decreased for a subsequent stimulation frame.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein said step of determining said amplitude of said multiplicity of said channels comprises determining an amplitude of a multiplicity of stimulation signals corresponding to said multiplicity of said channels.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein one or more stimulation signals are applied to a patient via said channels selected for stimulation during said stimulation frame.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein said multiplicity of channels comprises a total number of channels of said implantable neural stimulation system.

15. A method of selecting a number of channels out of a multiplicity of channels of an implantable cochlear stimulation system for stimulation during a stimulation frame, said method comprising:

obtaining a threshold corresponding to said stimulation frame;

determining an amplitude corresponding to each channel within said multiplicity of channels;

comparing said amplitude corresponding to each of said channels within said multiplicity of channels to said threshold; and

selecting, by a speech processor included within the implantable cochlear stimulation system, each of said channels having amplitudes that exceed said threshold for stimulation during said stimulation frame;

wherein if a total number of said selected channels is less than a predetermined number, said method further comprises randomly selecting one or more additional channels having amplitudes less than said threshold until said total number of said selected channels is equal to said predetermined number.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said selecting of said one or more additional channels further comprises basing said selection of said additional channels on a frequency of said channels having amplitudes less than said threshold.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising selecting a number of channels having a lowest frequency among said channels having amplitudes less than said threshold.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising selecting a number of channels having a highest frequency among said channels having amplitudes less than said threshold.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein if a total number of said selected channels is greater than a predetermined number, said threshold is increased for a subsequent stimulation frame.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein if a total number of said selected channels is less than a predetermined number, said threshold is decreased for a subsequent stimulation frame.

21. A method of selecting a number of channels out of a multiplicity of channels of an implantable cochlear stimulation system for stimulation of a patient, said method comprising:

obtaining a threshold;

determining an amplitude corresponding to each channel within said multiplicity of channels;

comparing said amplitude corresponding to each of said channels within said multiplicity of channels to said threshold; and
