Abstract

A petawatt pulsed-power accelerator can be driven by various types of electrical-pulse generators, including conventional Marx generators and linear-transformer drivers. The pulsed-power accelerator can be configured to drive an electrical load from one- or two-sides. Various types of loads can be driven; for example, the accelerator can be used to drive a high-current z-pinch load. When driven by slow-pulse generators (e.g., conventional Marx generators), the accelerator comprises an oil section comprising at least one pulse-generator level having a plurality of pulse generators; a water section comprising a pulse-forming circuit for each pulse generator and a level of monolithic triplate radial-transmission-line impedance transformers, that have variable impedance profiles, for each pulse-generator level; and a vacuum section comprising triplate magnetically insulated transmission lines that feed an electrical load. When driven by LTD generators or other fast-pulse generators, the need for the pulse-forming circuits in the water section can be eliminated.

Claims (24)

1. A pulsed-power accelerator, comprising:

an oil section comprising one or more pulse generator levels, each level having a plurality of pulse generators and wherein each pulse generator stores electrical energy for generating a forward-going power pulse;

a water section comprising a monolithic triplate radial-transmission-line impedance transformer for each of the one or more pulse generator levels, wherein each radial-transmission-line impedance transformer has a variable impedance profile, for combining the forward-going power pulses and propagating a combined radially converging power pulse; and

a vacuum section comprising a triplate vacuum-transmission line for each of the monolithic triplate radial-transmission-line impedance transformers, for delivering the combined radially converging power pulse to an electrical load.

2. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the pulse generator comprises a Marx generator.

3. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the pulse generator comprises one or more capacitors.

4. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the pulse generator comprises a pulse transformer.

5. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the pulse generator comprises a linear inductive voltage adder.

6. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the pulse generator comprises a dielectric cavity adder.

7. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the pulse generator comprises a linear-transformer driver.

8. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , further comprising an intermediate pulse-forming circuit in the water section for each of the pulse generators in the oil section, that forms the forward-going power pulse from each pulse generator prior to their combination by the monolithic triplate radial-transmission-line impedance transformer.

9. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 8 , wherein the pulse-forming circuit comprises one or more intermediate-store capacitors for each pulse generator.

10. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 8 , wherein the pulse-forming circuit comprises a Blumlein circuit.

11. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 8 , wherein the pulse-forming circuit comprises one or more switches.

12. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 11 , wherein the one or more switches comprises an electrically- or laser-triggered gas switch.

13. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 11 , wherein the one or more switches comprises a self-break switch.

14. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 11 , wherein the one or more switches comprises a triggered liquid-dielectric or solid-dielectric switch.

15. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 11 , wherein the one or more switches comprises a semiconductor switch.

16. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 15 , wherein the semiconductor switch comprises a photoconductive switch.

17. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the variable impedance profile comprises an approximately exponential impedance profile.

18. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , further comprising a vacuum convolute in the vacuum section that adds the radially converging power pulses of two or more triplate vacuum-transmission lines and delivers the combined current to the electrical load.

19. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 18 , wherein the vacuum convolute comprises a post-hole convolute.

20. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the electrical load comprises a z-pinch.

21. The pulsed-power accelerator of claim 1 , wherein the accelerator is a two-sided accelerator comprising one or more pulse-generator levels on a bottom side and one or more pulse-generator levels on a top side.
