Abstract

A vehicle support and restraint system for a vehicle transporter permits the operator to consistently and securely install either soft tie-down or hard tie-down cargo vehicle restraint while standing at ground level.

Claims (44)

1. In a vehicle transporter having an longitudinally extending frame, a vehicle support comprising:

(a) a plurality of elongate, transversely extending, longitudinally spaced apart rungs, a surface of at least three of said rungs arranged to approximate a plane; and

(b) a winch shaft rotatably affixed to said vehicle support and engageable by a flexible member used to secure a vehicle supported by said vehicle support, said flexible member windable on said winch shaft at one of a continuity of alternative locations spaced along said winch shaft for a majority of a length of one of said rungs.

2. In a vehicle transporter having an longitudinally extending frame, a vehicle support comprising:

(a) a plurality of elongate, transversely extending, longitudinally spaced apart rungs, a surface of at least three of said rungs arranged to approximate a plane; and

(b) a beam supported by at least two of said rungs, said beam approximately centrally located on and extending transverse to said rungs supporting said beam, said beam including a beam surface contactable by a wheel of a vehicle supported by said rungs.

3. The vehicle support of claim 2 wherein said beam surface includes a plurality of facets arranged to increase traction of said wheel.

4. The vehicle support of claim 2 wherein a cross-section of said beam comprises a base bounded by a first leg projecting substantially normal to said base and a second leg spaced apart from said first leg and projecting substantially normal to said base.

5. The vehicle transporter of claim 4 wherein at least one of said first leg and said second leg of said beam includes a plurality of surfaces arranged to increase traction of said wheel.

6. The vehicle support of claim 4 wherein said surface of at least one of said rungs comprises a plurality of facets arranged to increase traction of said wheel.

7. In a vehicle transporter having a frame, a vehicle support comprising:

(a) a first elongate beam supported by said frame of said vehicle transporter and arranged substantially parallel to a side of said frame;

(b) a second elongate beam supported by said frame of said vehicle transporter and arranged substantially parallel to and spaced transversely apart from said first beam; and

(c) a plurality of transversely extending spaced apart rungs each having a rung surface extending between a first rung end portion supported by said first beam and a second rung end portion supported by said second beam, at least three of said rung surfaces being arranged to approximate a plane; and

(d) an elongate intermediate beam supported approximately centrally spaced between said first beam and said spaced apart second beam by at least two of said rungs, said intermediate beam comprising a beam surface contactable by a wheel supported on said rungs.

8. The vehicle support of claim 7 wherein said beam surface includes a plurality of facets arranged to increase traction of said wheel.

9. The vehicle support of claim 7 wherein a cross-section of said elongate intermediate beam comprises a base bounded by a first leg projecting substantially normal to said base and a second leg spaced apart from said first leg and projecting substantially normal to said base.

10. The vehicle support of claim 9 wherein said beam surface comprises a surface of at least one of said first leg and said second leg of said intermediate beam and includes a plurality of facets arranged to increase traction of said wheel.

11. The vehicle support of claim 9 wherein said rung surface of at least one of said rungs comprises a plurality of facets arranged to increase traction of said wheel.

12. A vehicle transporter comprising:

(a) a transporter frame having a side;

(b) a first vehicle support supported by said transporter frame;

(c) a second vehicle support supported above said first vehicle support by said transporter frame, said second vehicle support comprising:

(i) a first elongate beam arranged substantially parallel to said side of said transporter frame;

(ii) a second elongate beam arranged substantially parallel to and spaced transversely from said first beam; and

(iii) a plurality of transversely extending spaced apart rungs having a first end supported by said first beam and a second end supported by said second beam and arranged to support a wheel of a vehicle in contact with said rungs; and

(d) a telescopic screw actuator connected to said second vehicle support, said second vehicle support movable by changing a length of said telescopic screw actuator.

13. The vehicle transporter of claim 12 wherein said second vehicle support is movable vertically.

14. A vehicle transporter comprising:

(a) a transporter frame having a side;

(b) a first vehicle support supported by said transporter frame;

(c) a second vehicle support supported above said first vehicle support by said transporter frame, said second vehicle support comprising:

(i) a first elongate beam arranged substantially parallel to said side of said transporter frame;

(ii) a second elongate beam arranged substantially parallel to and spaced transversely from said first beam; and

(iii) a plurality of transversely extending spaced apart rungs each having a rung surface extending between a first end portion supported by said first beam, a second end portion supported by said second beam, at least three of said rung surfaces being arranged to approximate a plane; and

(d) a winch including an elongate winch shaft rotatably affixed to said second vehicle support.

The vehicle transporter of claim 14 wherein said winch shaft includes a portion defining a slot extending axially for a majority of a transverse space between said first beam and said second beam of said second vehicle support, said slot engageable by a member used to secure a vehicle supported by said second vehicle support.

16. The vehicle transporter of claim 14 wherein said winch further comprises a winch drum constrained to rotate with said winch shaft and axially movable on said winch shaft for a majority of a transverse space between said first beam and said second beam of said second vehicle support, said winch drum engageable by a member used to secure a vehicle supported by said second vehicle support.

17. The vehicle transporter of claim 14 wherein said second vehicle support is movable to a position where said winch is operable by a person standing at ground level.

18. The vehicle transporter of claim 14 wherein said second vehicle support further comprises an elongate intermediate beam supported approximately centrally spaced between said first beam and said spaced apart second beam by at least two of said rungs.

19. The vehicle transporter of claim 18 wherein said intermediate beam includes a plurality of surfaces arranged to increase traction of a wheel in contact with said intermediate beam.

20. The vehicle transporter of claim 14 wherein said second vehicle support further comprises an elongate intermediate beam having a cross-section defined by a base bounded by a first leg projecting substantially normal to said base and a second leg spaced apart from said first leg and projecting substantially normal to said base, said intermediate beam being supported approximately centrally spaced between said first beam and said spaced apart second beam by at least two of said rungs.

21. The vehicle transporter of claim 20 wherein at least one of said first leg and said second leg of said intermediate beam includes a plurality of surfaces arranged to increase traction of a wheel in contact with said intermediate beam.

22. The vehicle transporter of claim 14 wherein at least one of said rungs comprises a plurality of surfaces arranged to increase traction of a wheel.
