Abstract

Methods and apparatus for treatment of patent foramen ovale (PFO) provide for applying energy to tissues adjacent the PFO with a catheter device to substantially close the PFO acutely. Apparatus generally includes a catheter device having at least one energy transmission member at or near its distal end configured to apply energy to PFO tissues to acutely, substantially close the PFO. Applied energy may be monopolar or bipolar radiofrequency energy or any other suitable energy, such as laser, microwave, ultrasound, resistive heating or the like. Some embodiments of a catheter device further include one or more tissue apposition members near the distal end for helping bring PFO tissues together, such as a PFO covering member, a vacuum applying member and/or the like. PFO closure via energy-based approaches of the invention may help prevent stroke, treat migraine headache, and possibly treat or prevent other medical conditions.

Claims (25)

1. An intravascular catheter for treatment of an intracardiac site requiring treatment, the catheter comprising:

a closure device configured to detach from the catheter during treatment of the intracardiac site, the closure device including

a first pre-formed coil, and

a second pre-formed coil, the first coil being connected to the second coil by a non-coiled portion of the closure device such that the first and second coils are biased towards one another during treatment, the first and second coil being configured to receive energy from an energy source coupled to the catheter so as to provide heat to the intracardiac site requiring treatment.

2. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 , further comprising an elongated sheath comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and defining a bore,

wherein the closure device is movable from a first state in which the closure device extends within the bore to a second state in which the first and second coil are completely outside of the bore.

3. The intravascular catheter of claim 2 wherein the closure device is configured to detach from the rest of the catheter in the second state.

4. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 wherein the the first and second coils comprise a shape memory material.

5. The intravascular catheter of claim 4 wherein the shape memory material is Nitinol.

6. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 wherein the first and second coils include a welding agent to facilitate tissue reparation.

7. The intravascular catheter of claim 6 wherein the welding agent comprises a material selected from the group consisting of fibrinogen, collagen, and an adhesive.

8. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 , wherein the energy source comprises a radio frequency energy source.

9. An intravascular catheter for treatment of an intracardiac site requiring treatment, the catheter comprising:

a closure device configured to detach from the catheter during treatment of the intracardiac site, the closure device including

a spiral spring coil,

a backstop portion, and

an expansion portion that extends from the spiral spring coil to the backstop portion and that stretches an opening in the intracardiac site closed during treatment,

wherein the closure device is configured to receive energy from an energy source coupled to the catheter so as to provide heat to the intracardiac site requiring treatment.

10. The intravascular catheter of claim 9 further comprising an elongated sheath comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and defining a bore,

wherein the closure device is movable from a first state in which the closure device extends within the bore to a second state in which the coil is completely outside of the bore.

11. The intravascular catheter of claim 9 wherein the coil comprises a shape memory material.

12. The intravascular catheter of claim 11 wherein the shape memory material is Nitinol.

13. The intravascular catheter of claim 9 wherein the coil includes a welding agent to facilitate tissue reparation.

14. The intravascular catheter of claim 9 wherein the welding agent comprises a material selected from the group consisting of fibrinogen, collagen, and an adhesive.

15. The intravascular catheter of claim 9 wherein the energy source comprises a radio frequency energy source.
