Abstract

The present invention is directed to a display device which comprises two layers of insulating substrate, at least the substrate on the viewing side is transparent, an array of display cells sandwiched between the two layers of substrate, a writing means, and optionally an erasing means to magnetically or electrically erase the image. The display cells are filled with a dispersion of magnetic particles which may be charged or non-charged. The display of the invention eliminates the use of the transparent conductor film, such as ITO, on the viewing side. Therefore, the displays of this invention are more cost effective, more flexible and durable and capable of higher image contrast ratio and higher reflectance in the Dmin area.

Claims (13)

1. An image display comprising display cells filled with a dispersion in which magnetic particles of a first color and non-magnetic particles of a second color are suspended in a liquid medium, wherein said liquid medium is melted wax, and

both the magnetic particles of the first color and the non-magnetic particles of the second color are charged.

2. The image display of claim 1 further comprising a writing means, or an erasing means, or both.

3. The image display of claim 1 further comprising a conductive layer.

4. An image display comprising display cells filled with a dispersion in which magnetic particles of a first color and non-magnetic particles of a second color are suspended in a liquid medium or air, and

the magnetic particles of the first color are charged and the non-magnetic particles of the second color are non-charged.

5. The image display of claim 4 further comprises a conductive layer.

6. The image display of claim 4 further comprising a writing means, or an erasing means, or both.

7. The image display of claim 4 wherein said liquid medium is melted wax.

8. An image display comprising display cells filled with a dispersion in which magnetic particles of a first color and non-magnetic particles of a second color are suspended in a liquid medium wherein said liquid medium is melted wax, and

the magnetic particles of the first color are non-charged and the non-magnetic particles of the second color are charged.

9. The image display of claim 8 further comprises a conductive layer.

10. The image display of claim 8 further comprising a writing means, or an erasing means, or both.
