System and method for locating-based searches and advertising
A system and method provides location-aware search results from a navigation or other device and provides one or more enhanced listings or advertisements with the results to offset the communication cost of the search. The sponsor may be charged for the listing or advertisement and the charge may be based on whether the device arrives in an area around the sponsor location within a threshold amount of time.
1 . A method of receiving search results, comprising:
identifying a location of a device using radio signals;
receiving at least one search term from a user;
receiving an indication of a target location for the search, the target location comprising at least one of the location and a different location;
providing an identifier of the target location and the at least one search term to a server; and
receiving results from the server corresponding to the search term, the results comprising at least one selected from the group comprising:
an advertisement for a first sponsor, the first sponsor corresponding to at least one selected from the at least one search term and the at least one target location; and
an enhanced display of results corresponding to a second sponsor; and wherein
at least one selected from the group comprising the first sponsor and the second sponsor pays a fee.
2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the first sponsor comprises the second sponsor.
3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the target location is the location of the device.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the target location and the at least one search term is provided to the server over a network for which a fee is paid for use.
5 . The method of claim 1 , additionally comprising sending a follow up request, the request regarding a service to be provided by the sponsor.
6 . The method of claim 1 :
additionally comprising identifying a different location of the device, after the results are received; and
wherein the fee is responsive to the different location identified.
7 . A system for receiving search results, comprising:
a location identifier for identifying a location of a device using at least one radio signal, and for providing the location of the device at an output; and
a device search manager having an input coupled to the location identifier for receiving the location, the input further coupled for receiving from a user at least one search term and a target location for the search, the target location comprising at least one of the location and a different location, the device search manager for providing an identifier of the target location and the at least one search term to a server via an input/output and for receiving via the input/output results from the server corresponding to the search term, the results comprising at least one selected from the group comprising:
an advertisement for a first sponsor, the first sponsor corresponding to at least one selected from the at least one search term and the at least one target location; and
an enhanced display of results corresponding to a second sponsor; and wherein
at least one selected from the group comprising the first sponsor and the second sponsor pays a fee to an operator of the server.
8 . The system of claim 7 wherein the first sponsor comprises the second sponsor.
9 . The system of claim 7 wherein the target location is the location of the device.
10 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the target location and the at least one search term is provided to the server over a network for which a fee is paid for use.
11 . The system of claim 7 :
wherein the device search manager is additionally for providing at an output an identifier of at least one selected from the first sponsor and the second sponsor;
additionally comprising a follow up manager having an input coupled to the device search manager output for receiving the identifier of the at least one selected from the first sponsor and the second sponsor, the follow up manager for sending via an output a follow up request, the request regarding a service to be provided by the sponsor.
12 . The system of claim 7 :
wherein the location identifier is additionally for identifying, after the results are received, a different location of the device using at least one radio signal, and for providing the different location of the device at an output; and
the device search manager is additionally for providing at an output an identifier of at least one selected from the group comprising the first sponsor and the second sponsor; and
the system additionally comprises a sponsor tracker having an input coupled to the location identifier for receiving the different location, and coupled to the device search manager for receiving the identifier of the at least one selected from the group comprising the first sponsor and the second sponsor, the sponsor tracker for providing to the server via an output an indication responsive to the different location corresponding to said identifier; and
wherein the fee is responsive indication provided.
13 . A computer program product comprising a computer useable medium having computer readable program code embodied therein for receiving search results, the computer program product comprising computer readable program code devices configured to cause a computer system to:
identify a location of a device using radio signals;
receive at least one search term from a user;
receive an indication of a target location for the search, the target location comprising at least one of the location and a different location;
provide an identifier of the target location and the at least one search term to a server; and
receive results from the server corresponding to the search term, the results comprising at least one selected from the group comprising:
an advertisement for a first sponsor, the first sponsor corresponding to at least one selected from the at least one search term and the at least one target location; and
an enhanced display of results corresponding to a second sponsor; and wherein
at least one selected from the group comprising the first sponsor and the second sponsor pays a fee.
14 . The computer program product of claim 13 wherein the first sponsor comprises the second sponsor.
15 . The computer program product of claim 13 wherein the target location is the location of the device.
16 . The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the target location and the at least one search term is provided to the server over a network for which a fee is paid for use.
17 . The computer program product of claim 13 , additionally comprising computer readable program code devices configured to cause the computer system to send a follow up request, the request regarding a service to be provided by the sponsor.
18 . The computer program product of claim 13 :
additionally comprising computer readable program code devices configured to cause the computer system to identify a different location of the device, after the results are received; and
wherein the fee is responsive to the different location identified.
