Abstract

An organic electro luminescent display with auxiliary layers on a cathode contact and an encapsulating junction region to easily remove polymer organic layers of the junction and a method for fabricating the same. The organic electro luminescent display has the first electrode formed on a lower insulating substrate, a pixel defining layer formed to make some portions of the first electrode opened over the entire surface of the lower insulating substrate, an organic emission layer formed on an opening of the first electrode, the second electrode formed on the organic emission layer, an upper substrate for encapsulating the first electrode, the organic emission layer and the second electrode, and auxiliary layers formed on the cathode contact and the encapsulating junction region of the lower insulating substrate.

Claims (32)

1. A method of fabricating an organic electro luminescent display, comprising:

forming a first electrode on a lower insulating substrate;

forming a pixel defining layer only on portions of the first electrode leaving other portions of the first electrode exposed;

forming auxiliary layers on portions of the lower insulating substrate outside a pixel region;

forming an organic layer on the pixel defining layer, the other portions of the first electrode and on the auxiliary layers;

removing portions of the organic layer arranged on the auxiliary layers; and

forming a second electrode on remaining portions of the organic layer, the auxiliary layers are formed simultaneously with the formation of the first electrode.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sealing together an upper substrate to the lower insulating substrate.

3. The method of claim 2 , the sealing comprising:

applying an ultraviolet light curable sealant to the lower insulating substrate outside the pixel region to surround the pixel region;

attaching the upper substrate to the sealant arranged on the lower insulating substrate; and

irradiating portions of the display containing the sealant with ultraviolet light.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising forming a waveguide on the lower insulating substrate prior to said applying the sealant, the waveguide being adapted to redirect said ultraviolet light back into said sealant upon said irradiating.

5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising forming a reflecting plate on the lower insulating substrate prior to said applying the sealant, the reflecting plate being adapted to reflect said ultraviolet light back into said sealant upon said irradiating.

6. The method of claim 5 , the forming of the reflecting plate being simultaneous to the forming of the first electrode.

7. The method of claim 1 , the removing being accomplished by laser ablation.

8. A method of fabricating an organic electro luminescent display, comprising:

forming a first electrode on a lower insulating substrate:

forming a pixel defining layer only on portions of the first electrode leaving other portions of the first electrode exposed;

forming auxiliary layers on portions of the lower insulating substrate outside a pixel region;

forming an organic layer on the pixel defining layer, the other portions of the first electrode and on the auxiliary layers;

removing portions of the organic layer arranged on the auxiliary layers; and

forming a second electrode on remaining portions of the organic layer, the auxiliary layers are formed simultaneously with the formation of the pixel defining layer.

9. A method, comprising:

providing a first substrate having a display area and a non-display area about a periphery of the display area;

forming auxiliary layers in the non display area of the first substrate, the auxiliary layers comprising a material that is reflective to ultraviolet radiation;

forming first electrodes in the display area of the first substrate;

forming an organic emitting layer on portions of the first electrodes and on the auxiliary layers; and

removing the organic emitting layer from the auxiliary layers.

10. The method of claim 9 , the removing being accomplished via laser ablation.

11. The method of claim 9 , the removing being accomplished by irradiating the organic emitting layer on the auxiliary layers with ultraviolet laser pulses.

12. The method of claim 9 , the auxiliary layers being formed simultaneous to the forming of the first electrodes.
