Abstract

In an insertion instrument for a three-piece intervertebral implant that includes an upper part that can be placed against a vertebra, a lower part that can be placed against the adjacent vertebra, and a pivot element that can be inserted between these two parts, the instrument having two arms, disposed side by side and supported pivotably relative to one another on one end, which at their free ends each have one retention device for the upper part and lower part, respectively, of the intervertebral implant, it is proposed that a longitudinal guide for the pivot element is disposed in one of the arms.

Claims (37)

1. A medical device installation tool for implanting a pivot element between an upper part and a lower part of an implant, the medical device installation tool comprising:

a pair of opposed levers, each having a proximal handle portion and a distal portion, wherein the distal portion of each lever is attachable to the implant;

a pusher block positioned between the pair of levers and slidably moveable from an initial location toward the distal portions of the levers, the pusher block configured to move the pivot element towards the distal portions; and

a pusher rod connected to the pusher block and at least partially located between the pair of levers, wherein the pusher rod moves the pusher block in a direction toward the distal portion of the levers; and

a spreader element located between the two levers and positioned such that movement of the spreader element towards the distal portions moves the two levers apart, wherein movement of the pusher block is independent of movement of the spreader element.

2. A medical device installation tool according to claim 1 , wherein one of the opposed levers has a longitudinal guide structure that receives the pusher block.

3. A medical device installation tool according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of opposed levers comprises a first lever and a second lever, the first lever including two spaced-apart parallel legs.

4. A medical device installation tool according to claim 1 , wherein the distal portions of the pair of opposed levers each include a retention pin configured to retain a part of an intervertebral implant.

5. A medical device installation tool according to claim 1 , further comprising a fulcrum connected between the pair of levers.

6. A medical device installation tool according to claim 5 , wherein the fulcrum comprises a pivot structure at the proximal handle portion of the pair of opposed levers, and the pivot structure permits the distal portion of the opposed levers to move towards and away from each other.

7. A medical device installation tool according to claim 5 , wherein one of the opposed levers comprises a pair of legs having grooves for receiving the pusher block, the medical device installation tool further comprising an insertion region for insertion of the pusher block, the insertion region disposed between the legs and distal of the fulcrum.

8. A medical device installation tool according to claim 5 , wherein the initial location is disposed distal of the fulcrum and the pusher block is movable to a final location adjacent the distal ends of the levers.

9. A medical device installation tool according to claim 1 , wherein each lever is movable independent of the other lever.

10. A medical device installation tool according to claim 1 , wherein the pivot element permits relative movement between the upper and lower parts of the implant.

11. A method for inserting into an intervertebral space an implant of the type having cooperating vertebrae engaging upper and lower parts, comprising the steps of:

taking an implant having two apertures on each of the upper and lower parts and mounting it on an insertion device which has a first arm with two aperture engaging pins and a second arm with two aperture engaging pins, and

securing the insertion device to the implant by moving the pins within their respective apertures, wherein the securing step includes rotating a rotating element of the insertion device.

12. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the mounting step includes mounting the upper part onto the pins of an upper arm and mounting the lower part onto two pins of a lower arm.

13. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the securing step comprises rotating at least one pin within its aperture.

14. An insertion instrument configured to install an implant in an intervertebral space, the insertion instrument comprising:

first and second opposing levers, each lever elongated along a longitudinal direction between a proximal end and a distal end, wherein each lever is configured to insert corresponding first and second portions of the implant, respectively, into the intervertebral space;

a holder member carried by one of the levers and configured to connect to the corresponding portion of the implant, wherein the holder member is fixed at one of a plurality of angles with respect to the one of the levers prior to insertion of the corresponding portion of the implant into the intervertebral space; and

a rotary element configured for rotation to secure retention pins in respective apertures of the implant.

15. An insertion instrument according to claim 14 , wherein the holder member and the one of the levers each defines a plurality of bores offset with respect to each other in the longitudinal direction, the insertion instrument further comprising a fixation pin selectively inserted into the bores.

16. An insertion instrument according to claim 15 , wherein one of the levers comprises a pair of legs having the retention pins configured to be inserted into a respective aperture of the corresponding implant portion.

17. An insertion instrument according to claim 16 , further comprising a pusher block positioned between the levers and moveable towards the distal end of each lever, so as to correspondingly move a pivot element toward the distal end of each lever and between the implant portions in the intervertebral space.

18. An insertion instrument according to claim 17 , wherein each leg defines an inner surface that faces the inner surface of the other leg, wherein a longitudinally elongated groove is defined in the inner surface of each leg, and the pusher block is supported in the grooves and movable along the grooves toward the distal end.

19. An insertion instrument according to claim 18 , further comprising a pusher rod connected to the pusher block, such that the pusher rod moves the pusher block toward the distal ends.

20. An insertion instrument according to claim 19 , further comprising a spreader element located between the levers, wherein movement of the spreader element toward the distal ends moves the levers apart from each other.

21. An insertion instrument according to claim 19 , further comprising a fulcrum connected to the first and second levers such that the first and second levers are configured for pivotal movement relative to each other.

22. A medical device installation tool, comprising:

a first lever having a proximal end and an opposing distal end, the first lever including a pair of opposing longitudinally elongated legs, each leg defining a proximal end and an opposing distal end, and each leg further defining an inner surface, such that the inner surface of each leg faces the inner surface of the other leg, and a longitudinally elongate groove formed in the inner surface of each leg;

a second lever having a proximal end and an opposing distal end,

a bearing block connected between the proximal ends of the first and second levers such that the first lever is pivotally mounted to the bearing block;

a U-shaped holder member mounted to the distal end of the second lever and configured to connect to a trial implant;

a spreader element located between the first and second levers and positioned such that movement of the spreader element towards the distal ends moves the two levers apart about the U-shaped holder; and

a push member supported in the groove of each leg and movable along each leg toward the distal end of the second lever.
