Abstract

The invention provides theta defensin analogs having antimicrobial activity. The invention also provides a method of reducing or inhibiting growth or survival of a microorganism in an environment capable of sustaining the growth or survival of the microorganism, comprising administering an effective amount of a theta defensin analog to the environment, thereby reducing or inhibiting the growth or survival of the microorganism.

Claims (24)

1. A theta defensin analog selected from the analogs referenced as SEQ ID NOS:23, 24, 26-28 and 30.

2. A pharmaceutical composition, comprising the theta defensin analog of claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

3. A method of reducing or inhibiting growth or survival of a microorganism in an environment capable of sustaining the growth or survival of the microorganism, comprising administering an effective amount of a theta defensin analog of claim 1 to said environment, thereby reducing or inhibiting the growth or survival of the microorganism.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein said environment is a food or food product.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein said environment is a solution.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said solution is a contact lens solution.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein said solution is an eye wash solution.

8. The method of claim 3 , wherein said environment is an inanimate object comprising a surface.

9. The method of claim 3 , wherein said environment is a mammal.

10. The method of claim 3 , wherein said administration is topical.

11. The method of claim 3 , wherein said administration is by injection.

12. The method of claim 3 , wherein said administration is oral.

13. A theta defensin analog comprising SEQ ID NO:29.

14. A pharmaceutical composition, comprising the theta defensin analog of claim 13 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

15. A method of reducing or inhibiting growth or survival of a microorganism in an environment capable of sustaining the growth or survival of the microorganism, comprising administering an effective amount of the theta defensin analog of claim 13 to said environment, thereby reducing or inhibiting the growth or survival of the microorganism.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said environment is a food or food product.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said environment is a solution.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein said solution is a contact lens solution.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein said solution is an eye wash solution.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein said environment is an inanimate object comprising a surface.

21. The method of claim 15 , wherein said environment is a mammal.

22. The method of claim 15 , wherein said administration is topical.

23. The method of claim 15 , wherein said administration is by injection.

24. The method of claim 15 , wherein said administration is oral.
