Abstract

An information processing system comprises a first computing device configured to receive state information through a first port and selectively initiate execution of a software application by the first computing device when a state of at least one of the first computing device and a second computing device is a first state, and the second computing device through a second port when the state is a second state, the software application being associable with one or more software objects.

Claims (76)

1. An information processing system, comprising:

a first computing device figured to:

receive a first information packet originating from a client;

in response to the first information packet, identify a computing device that has a connection with the client;

when the identified computing device is the first computing device, perform an operation of a server application in response to the first information packet; and

when the identified computing device is a second computing device, output a second information packet addressed to a forwarded-thread address of the second computing device, the second information packet including a reference to the connection and a field indicating the packet is a forwarded packet in a header of the second information packet.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the second information packet includes the first information packet.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the reference includes an Internet Protocol (“IP”) address of the client, a port of a second application executed by the client, an IP address of the second computing device, and a port of a server application executed by the second computing device.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the port of the server application is a Transmission Control Protocol port.

5. The system of claim 3 wherein the port of the server application is a User Datagram Protocol port.

6. The system of claim 3 wherein the reference is included within a single header of the second information packet.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the first computing device is configured to receive the first information packet through a global computer network.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the first computing device is configured to:

when the identified computing device is a second computing device, output the second information packet to the second computing device through a local area network.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the server application is a socket-based application.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the first computing device comprises a network interface controller.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the first information packet is addressed by the client to the first computing device, and wherein the first computing device is configured to receive the first information packet in response to the addressing.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the first computing device and the second computing device are servers in a server farm.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the identified computing device stores a data structure of the connection and the reference to the connection comprises a reference to the data structure.

14. A method performed by a first computing device of an information processing system, the method comprising:

receiving a first information packet originating from a client;

in response to the first information packet, identifying a computing device that has a connection with the client;

when the identified computing device is the first computing device, performing an operation of a server application in response to the first information packet; and

when the identified computing device is a second computing device, outputting a second information packet addressed to a forward thread address of the second computing device, the second information packet including a reference to the connection of a field indicating the second packet is a forwarded packet in a header of the second information packet.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the second information packet includes the first information packet.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein the reference includes an IP address of the client, a port of a second application executed by the client, an IP address of the second computing device, and a port of a server application executed by the second computing device.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the port of the server application is a TCP port.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein the port of the server application is a UDP port.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the reference is included within a single header of the second information packet.

20. The method of claim 14 wherein receiving the first information packet includes receiving the first information packet through a global computer network.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein outputting the second information packet to the second computing device includes outputting the second information packet through a local area network.

22. The method of claim 14 wherein the application is a socket-based application.

23. The method of claim 14 wherein the first computing device comprises a network interface controller.

24. The method of claim 14 wherein the first information packet is addressed by the client to the first computing device and receiving the first information packet includes receiving the first information packet in response to the addressing.

25. The method of claim 14 wherein the first computing device is a first server in a server farm and the second computing device is a second server in the server farm.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein receiving the first information packet originating from the client comprises routing the first information packet to the first server through a first network; and

identifying the computing device that stores the data structure of the connection with the client comprises identifying a destination server in the server farm that stores the data structure of the connection with the client.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein when the identified destination server is the first server, the performing the operation of the server application in response to the first information packet comprises executing, by the first server, a server application associated with the received packet; and

when the identified destination server is the second server, the outputting the second information packet to the second computing device comprises;

generating the second information packet; and

forwarding the second information packet to the second server through a second network.

28. The method of claim 14 wherein the identified computing device stores a data structure of the connection and the reference to the connection comprises a reference to the data structure.

29. An information processing system, comprising:

a first computing device comprising:

means for receiving a first information packet originating from a client;

means for responding to the first information packet by identifying a computing device that has a connection with the client;

means for selectively performing an operation of a server application configured to perform the operation when the identified computing device is the first computing device; and

means for selectively outputting a second information packet to a second computing device configured to output the second information packet addressed to a forward thread address of the second computing device when the identified computing device is the second computing device, the second information packet including a reference to the connection and a field indicating the second packet is a forwarded packet in a header of the second information packet.

30. The system of claim 29 wherein the second information packet includes the first information packet.

31. The system of claim 29 wherein the reference includes an IP address of the client, a port of a second application executed by the client, an IP address of the second computing device, and a port of a server application executed by the second computing device.

32. The system of claim 31 wherein the port of the server application is a TCP port.

33. The system of claim 31 wherein the port of the server application is a UDP port.

34. The system of claim 31 wherein the reference is included within a single header of the second information packet.

35. The system of claim 29 wherein the means for receiving is configured to receive the first information packet through a global computer network.

36. The method of claim 35 wherein the means for selectively outputting is configured to:

when the identified computing device is a second computing device, output the second information packet to the second computing device through a local area network.

37. The system of claim 29 wherein the server application is a socket-based application.

38. The system of claim 29 wherein the first computing device comprises a network interface controller.

39. The system of claim 29 wherein the first information packet is addressed by the client to the first computing device, and wherein the means for receiving is configured to receive the first information packet in response to the addressing.

40. The system of claim 29 wherein the first computing device and the second computing device are servers in a server farm.

41. The system of claim 29 wherein the identified computing device stores a data structure of the connection and the reference to the connection comprises a reference to the data structure.

42. A computer-readable memory medium whose contents, when executed, cause a first computing device to process information, by performing a method comprising:

receiving a first information packet originating from a client;

in response to the first information packet, identifying a computing device that has a connection with the client;

when the identified computing device is the first computing device, performing an operation of a server application in response to the first information packet; and

when the identified computing device is a second computing device, outputting a second information packet addressed to a forward thread of the second computing device, the second information packet including a reference to the connection and a field indicating the second information packet is a forwarded packet in a header of the second information packet.

43. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 42 wherein the second information packet includes the first information packet.

44. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 42 wherein the reference includes an IP address of the client, a port of a second application executed by the client, an IP address of the second computing device, and a port of a server application executed by the second computing device.

45. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 44 wherein the port of the server application is a TCP port.

46. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 44 wherein the port of the server application is a UDP port.

47. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 44 wherein the reference is included within a single header of the second information packet.

48. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 42 wherein the computer-readable medium is a memory of a computer device.

49. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 42 wherein the first information packet is receive through a global computer network.

50. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 42 wherein the application is a socket-based application.

51. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 42 wherein the first computing device comprises a network interface controller.

52. The computer-readable memory medium of claim 42 wherein the identified computing device stores a data structure of the connection and the reference to the connection comprises a reference to the data structure.
