Abstract

An approach provides for recording and editing digital media. A digital media stream is generated from an input signal (such as a live broadcast feed). The digital media stream is transmitted to a browser application configured to concurrently record and edit the digital media stream.

Claims (37)

1. A method for recording digital media, the method comprising:

receiving an input signal;

generating a digital media stream from the input signal; and

transmitting the digital media stream to a browser application configured to concurrently record and edit the digital media stream,

wherein the edit of the digital media stream is performed remotely from the browser application.

2. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

applying a protection scheme to the digital media stream to protect from unauthorized use, the protection scheme specifying encryption and information about usage rights.

3. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

tracking usage of the media stream.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the media stream is encoded according to a Group of Pictures (GOP) format.

5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the input signal includes a live broadcast feed, and the media stream is a real-time media stream.

6. A system for recording digital media, the system comprising:

a video server configured to receive an input signal, and to generate a digital media stream from the input signal; and

a media server configured to transmit the digital media stream to a browser application configured to concurrently record and edit the digital media stream,

wherein the edit of the digital media stream is performed remotely from the browser application.

7. A system according to claim 6 , further comprising:

a media protection module configured to apply a protection scheme to the digital media stream to protect from unauthorized use, the protection scheme specifying encryption and information about usage rights.

8. A system according to claim 6 , further comprising:

an accounting module configured to track usage of the media stream.

9. A system according to claim 6 , wherein the media stream is encoded according to a Group of Pictures (GOP) format.

10. A system according to claim 6 , wherein the input signal includes a live broadcast feed, and the media stream is a real-time media stream.

11. A method for recording digital media, the method comprising:

invoking a browser application to access a media server configured to output a digital media stream, wherein the digital media stream is ingested from an input signal; and

retrieving the digital media stream via the browser application, wherein the browser application is configured to concurrently record and edit the digital media stream, and wherein the edit of the digital media stream is performed remotely from the browser application.

12. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the digital media stream has been encoded with a protection scheme to protect from unauthorized use, the protection scheme specifying encryption and information about usage rights.

13. A method according to claim 11 , wherein a media services platform includes the media service and an accounting module, the method further comprising:

transmitting accounting information to the accounting module for tracking usage of the media stream by the browser application.

14. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the media stream is encoded according to a Group of Pictures (GOP) format.

15. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the input signal includes a live broadcast feed, and the media stream is a real-time media stream.

16. An apparatus for recording digital media, the apparatus comprising:

a browser application configured to access a media server configured to output a digital media stream, wherein the digital media stream is ingested from an input signal; and

wherein the browser application is configured to concurrently record and edit the digital media stream, and wherein the edit of the digital media stream is performed remotely from the browser application.

17. An apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the digital media stream has been encoded with a protection scheme to protect from unauthorized use, the protection scheme specifying encryption and information about usage rights.

18. An apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein a media services platform includes the media service and an accounting module, the browser application transmitting accounting information to the accounting module for tracking usage of the media stream by the browser application.

19. An apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the media stream is encoded according to a Group of Pictures (GOP) format.

20. An apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the input signal includes a live broadcast feed, and the media stream is a real-time media stream.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the edit the digital media stream commences before the record is complete.
