Abstract

Rings described herein can be installed in a stuffing box assembly about a rotary element without the need for dismantling the apparatus. A system can comprise at least two rings. Each ring can have a first section and a second section. The first section of the ring has an outer rounded edge, a first mating edge, an inner rounded edge, and a second mating edge. The second section has an outer rounded edge, a first mating edge for abutting the first mating edge of the first section to form a joint, an inner rounded edge, and a second mating edge for abutting the second mating edge of the second section to form a joint. The outer rounded edges of the first and second sections comprise the circumference of the outer edge of the ring when the first and second sections are mated. Each ring can be positioned on top of another ring to align the outer edges of the rings.

Claims (53)

1. A system for positioning around a rotary element, the system comprising:

first and second substantially circular ring elements having inner and outer circumferences;

each ring element comprising:

a first section comprising:

a first section outer rounded edge;

a first section first mating edge;

a first section inner rounded edge;

a first section second mating edge; and

at least one aperture; and

a second section comprising:

a second section outer rounded edge;

a second section first mating edge for abutting the first section first mating edge;

a second section inner rounded edge; and

a second section second mating edge for abutting the first section second mating edge;

wherein the first section inner and outer rounded edges and the second section inner and outer rounded edges form the respective inner and outer circumferences when the first section first mating edge and the second section first mating edge are substantially aligned and when the first section second mating edge and the second section second mating edge are substantially aligned, and wherein the first section inner rounded edge comprises a majority of the inner circumference and the first section outer rounded edge comprises a majority of the outer circumference; and

wherein the first ring's at least one aperture is aligned with the second ring's at least one aperture, whereby the first ring's first section first mating edge is offset from the second ring's first section first mating edge.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second section comprises at least one aperture.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ring element comprises four apertures.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the circumference of the first section outer rounded edge comprises approximately ⅔ of the circumference of the ring element.

5. A system comprising:

at least first and second rings, each ring comprising:

a first ring component and a second ring component each comprising:

a substantially flat top and bottom;

a substantially circular outer edge;

a substantially circular inner edge;

at lest one aperture; and

a pair of complementary edges between the outer edge and the inner edge;

wherein the complementary edges on the first ring component align with the complementary edges on the second ring component to form a ring;

wherein the inner and outer edges of the first and second ring components comprise the respective inner and outer circumferences of the first ring or the second ring when the first and second ring components are aligned;

wherein the first ring is positioned on top of the second ring to align the outer edges of the first and second rings, and

wherein the inner and outer edges of the first component are the majority of the inner and outer circumferences, respectively, of the first and second rings; and

wherein the at least one aperture of the first ring component of the first ring is aligned with the at least one aperture of the second ring component of the second ring, whereby the complimentary edges of the first ring are offset from the complimentary edges of the second ring.

6. The system of claim 5 , further comprising a plurality of apertures extending substantially through the first ring components.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the circumference of the outer edge of the first component is approximately ⅔ of the circumference of the first ring.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein a first joint in the first ring between the complementary edge of the first component and the complementary edge of the second component is not aligned with a second joint in the second ring between the complementary edge of the first component and the complementary edge of the second component.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second ring is rotated by about 90 degrees in relation to the first ring.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second ring is rotated by about 180 degrees in relation to the first ring.

11. A shaft sealing system comprising:

first and second rings, each ring including:

a first section including:

a first section outer surface;

a first section first mating end surface;

a first section inner surface;

a first section second mating end surface; and

at least one aperture;

a second section comprising a majority of an inner and outer circumference of said each ring, said second section including:

a second section outer surface;

a second section first mating end surface;

a second section inner surface; and

a second section second mating end surface;

wherein the first ring's first section first mating end surface is mated with the first ring's second section first mating end surface, and the second ring's first section first mating end surface is mated with the second ring's second section second mating end surface, and

wherein the first ring's at least one aperture is aligned with the second ring's at least one aperture, whereby the first ring's first section first mating end surface is offset from the second ring's first section first mating end surface.

12. The shaft sealing system of claim 11 , wherein the first section include first and second apertures, and wherein the first ring's first aperture is aligned with the second ring's second aperture, whereby the first ring's first section first mating end surface is offset from the second ring's first section first mating end surface.
