Abstract

A method for controlling a plurality of fans operatively disposed in a shipping container. The fans are arranged in a plurality of banks within a closed fluid path. Each bank has a sub-set of the fans arranged in a plurality of horizontal layers. Two banks form an adjacent pair in the closed fluid path if a fluid exiting one of the two banks next enters the other of the two banks. The method includes determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the banks. The method also includes modifying each of the flow rates by a respective scaling factor such that the flow rates for each adjacent pair satisfy a continuity criteria. The method further includes controlling the fans based on the modified flow rates.

Claims (31)

1. A method for controlling a plurality of fans operatively disposed in a shipping container, the fans being arranged in a plurality of banks within a closed fluid path, each bank having a sub-set of the fans arranged in a plurality of horizontal layers, two banks form an adjacent pair in the closed fluid path if a fluid exiting one of the two banks next enters the other of the two banks, the method comprising:

determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the banks;

determining a difference between the flow rates for each adjacent pair;

modifying each of the flow rates by a respective scaling factor having a value at least equal to one such that the flow rates for each adjacent pair are substantially equal, wherein the scaling factors are subject to a minimization criteria if the differences are less than a predetermined threshold; and

controlling the fans such that the flow rates are substantially equal.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the scaling factor for one of the banks is substantially equal to a quotient of a maximum of the proposed fluid flow rates and the proposed fluid flow rate of the one bank if any of the differences are greater than a predetermined threshold, wherein the maximum proposed fluid flow rate is the numerator and the proposed fluid flow rate of the one bank is the denominator.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the minimization criteria is that the size of the scaling factors is minimized.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the sum of the modified fluid flow rates for one of the adjacent pairs is substantially equal to the sum of the proposed fluid flow rates for the one adjacent pair if the differences are less than a predetermined threshold.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining an apparent fluid temperature for each of the layers.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the apparent fluid temperature for one of the layers is a maximum fluid temperature measured within that layer.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein the apparent fluid temperature for one of the layers is an average of fluid temperatures measured within that layer.

8. The method of claim 5 further comprising determining a proposed fan speed for each of the fans based on a difference between the apparent fluid temperatures and a desired temperature and determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the layers based on the proposed fan speeds, wherein the proposed fluid flow rates of the banks are based on the proposed fluid flow rates of the layers.

9. The method of claim 5 further comprising determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the layers based on a difference between the apparent fluid temperatures and a desired temperature.

10. A method for controlling a plurality of fans operatively disposed in a shipping container, the fans being arranged in a plurality of banks within a closed fluid path, each bank having a sub-set of the fans arranged in a plurality of horizontal layers, two banks forming an adjacent pair in the closed fluid path if a fluid exiting one of the two banks next enters the other of the two banks, the method comprising:

determining an apparent fluid temperature for each of the layers;

determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the layers based on a difference between the apparent fluid temperatures and a desired temperature, wherein the apparent fluid temperature for one of the layers is one of a maximum fluid temperature measured within that layer and an average of fluid temperatures measured within that layer;

determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the banks based on the fluid flow rates of the corresponding layers of each of the banks;

modifying each of the flow rates by a respective scaling factor such that the flow rates for each adjacent pair satisfy a continuity criteria, wherein the scaling factors satisfy a minimization criteria;

determining modified fan speeds based on the modified flow rates; and

operating the fans at the modified fans speeds.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the continuity criteria is that the flow rates for each adjacent pair are substantially equal.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the minimization criteria is that the size of the scaling factors is minimized.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the minimization criteria is that the sum of the modified fluid flow rates for each adjacent pair is substantially equal to the sum of the proposed fluid flow rates for each adjacent pair respectively.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the scaling factors each have a value of at least one.

15. A method for controlling a plurality of fans operatively disposed in a shipping container, the fans being arranged in a plurality of banks within a closed fluid path, each bank having a sub-set of the fans arranged in a plurality of horizontal layers, two banks form an adjacent pair in the closed fluid path if a fluid exiting one of the two banks next enters the other of the two banks, the method comprising:

determining an apparent fluid temperature for each of the layers, wherein the apparent fluid temperature for one of the layers is an average of fluid temperatures measured within that layer;

determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the banks;

modifying each of the flow rates by a respective scaling factor having a value at least equal to one such that the flow rates for each adjacent pair are substantially equal; and

controlling the fans such that the flow rates are substantially equal.

16. The method of claim 15 further comprising determining a proposed fan speed for each of the fans based on a difference between the apparent fluid temperatures and a desired temperature and determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the layers based on the proposed fan speeds, wherein the proposed fluid flow rates of the banks are based on the proposed fluid flow rates of the layers.

17. The method of claim 15 further comprising determining a proposed fluid flow rate for each of the layers based on a difference between the apparent fluid temperatures and a desired temperature.
