Abstract

Systems and methods for communication are disclosed. A system in accordance with the present invention comprises a communications system, comprising at least one transmitter station and at least one receiver station, the transmitter station and receiver station communicating using an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) schema, wherein OFDM signals are transmitted in a notched frequency band arrangement such that at least one other transmission within a notch of the notched frequency band is used outside of the communications system.

Claims (27)

1. An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing communications system, comprising:

at least one transmitter station; and

at least one receiver station, the at least one transmitter station and the at least one receiver station communicating using an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) schema, wherein OFDM signals are transmitted only in a notched frequency band arrangement within a continuous frequency spectrum such that at least one other transmission outside a predetermined notch of the notched frequency band arrangement is used by a separate communications system other than the OFDM communications system, and each notch of the notched frequency band arrangement is used by the OFDM schema to transmit at least one subcarrier of the OFDM schema.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined notch of the notched frequency band arrangement can be repositioned within the notched frequency band arrangement.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the notched frequency band arrangement is a Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) frequency band.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the notch of the notched frequency band arrangement is used in a MSS system.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the system transmits broadband internet data.

6. The communications system of claim 1 , wherein the communications system is reconfigurable.

7. A communications method, comprising:

preparing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) signals in a continuous frequency band of interest;

notching the continuous frequency band of interest such that transmissions by a separate communications system are blocked within at least one predetermined notch of the continuous frequency band of interest;

transmitting the OFDM signals from a transmitter in the continuous frequency band of interest through the notched continuous frequency band of interest, wherein the OFDM signals are transmitted in the continuous frequency band of interest within the at least one predetermined notch and each notch of the notched continuous frequency band of interest is used to transmit at least one sub-carrier of the OFDM signals; and

receiving the OFDM signals at a receiver.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the continuous frequency band of interest is a Mobile Satellite Spectrum (MSS) band.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one predetermined notch is changed in frequency.

10. A communications system, comprising:

a plurality of receivers, each receiver in the plurality of receivers designed to receive signals in a continuous frequency spectrum; and

at least one base station, wherein the at least one base station transmits at least one signal within the continuous frequency spectrum, the at least one signal transmitted within a plurality of predetermined notches of the continuous frequency spectrum shared with other communications systems, the at least one base station being configured such that the at least one base station transmits the at least one signal only in the plurality of predetermined notches within the continuous frequency spectrum wherein at least one other communications system transmits within the continuous frequency spectrum and outside the plurality of predetermined notches, and each notch in the plurality of predetermined notches of the notched continuous frequency spectrum is used by the at least one base station to transmit at least one sub-carrier of the communications system.

11. The communications system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one base station transmits using an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) schema.

12. The communications system of claim 11 , wherein the predetermined notch corresponds to a transmission within a Mobile Satellite System (MSS) band.

13. The communications system of claim 12 , wherein the communications system is reconfigurable.

14. The communications system of claim 13 , wherein the communications system is reconfigured by geographic area.

15. The communications system of claim 12 , wherein at least one receiver is authorized to transmit within the communications system.

16. The communications system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one receiver transmits within the predetermined notch where the at least one receiver received the at least one signal.

17. The communications system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one receiver transmits after registration within the communications system.

18. The communications system of claim 17 , wherein the communications system assigns a transmit frequency to the at least one receiver upon registration.

19. The communications system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one receiver transmits after a tone/timing map is transmitted by the at least one base station to the at least one receiver.
