Abstract

An electrically-driven separation apparatus can be utilized to desalinate seawater and/or brackish water to provide irrigation water having a desired sodium adsorption ratio (SAR).

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

introducing water to be treated comprising at least one of seawater and brackish water into an electrically-driven separation apparatus to provide irrigation water having a sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) value of less than about 20;

passing at least one monovalent cationic species in the water to be treated through at least one monovalent cation selective membrane having a effective selectivity of at least about 1.5 in the electrically-driven separation apparatus; and

irrigating at least a portion of an agricultural facility with the irrigation water,

wherein the SAR value is determined according to the formula,

SAR

=

[

Na

]

[

Ca

[

Mg

wherein [Na] is the sodium species concentration, in mol/m 3 , in the irrigation water,

wherein [Ca] is the calcium species concentration, in mol/m 3 , in the irrigation water, and

wherein [Mg] is the magnesium species concentration, in mol/m 3 , in the irrigation water.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an act of heating the water to be treated.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an act of adjusting at least one of magnesium species concentration and a calcium species concentration of the irrigation water.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an act of removing at least a portion of any boron-containing species in the irrigation water.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electrically-driven separation apparatus comprises a monovalent anion selective membrane.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the electrically-driven separation apparatus comprises an electrodialysis device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the SAR value of the irrigation water is less than about 3.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an act of introducing the irrigation water into an ion exchange bed.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an act of adding at least one of seawater and brackish water to the irrigation water to produce a blended irrigation water having a desired SAR value.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an act of adjusting an operating parameter of the electrically-driven separation apparatus to achieve a predetermined SAR value of the irrigation water based on at least one requirement of the agricultural facility, wherein the at least one requirement is at least one of a characteristic of soil in the agricultural facility and a salt tolerance of at least one crop growing in the agricultural facility.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selectively removing greater than about half of an amount of at least one monovalent cationic species from the water to be treated in the electrically-driven separation apparatus while retaining greater than about half of an amount of at least one other monovalent cationic species.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing at least one monovalent cation species from the water to be treated at a rate of at least about twice that of a removal rate of at least one divalent cation species in the electrically-driven separation apparatus.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the irrigation water provided has a total dissolved solids content of about 1,500 ppm or more.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the irrigation water provided has a total dissolved solids content of between about 250 ppm and about 3,500 ppm.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the irrigation water provided has a total dissolved solids content of between about 11,000 ppm and about 17,000 ppm.
