Abstract

A method is provided for defining a required information delivery system capacity as a function of a user's service quality objectives. An information delivery system behavior is modeled to understand under what conditions the user's service quality objectives are met or not met. Conditions are captured in which the user's service quality objectives are met or not met. Statistical techniques are applied to the conditions captured. A model is induced that describes the conditions in which the user's service quality objectives are met or not met.

Claims (24)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving a set of quality of service objectives of one or more users;

monitoring a behavior of an information delivery system to capture data that indicates under what conditions said set of quality of service objectives are met or not met by the information delivery system;

based on said data, generating a model that describes the conditions in which said set of quality of service objectives are met or not met by the information delivery system; and

using said model to predict a capacity of said information delivery system under hypothetical conditions.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating said model includes using analytical techniques to minimize an error associated with the model.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating said model includes using statistical techniques to minimize an error associated with the model.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating said model includes using probability techniques to minimize an error associated with the model.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using said model to define a required capacity of said information delivery system as a function of said set of quality of service objectives.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using said model to predict a state of the information system required to meet a particular set of objectives.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said set of quality of service objectives include a function of a number of concurrent users.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said set of quality of service objectives include response time of the information delivery system.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said set of quality of service objectives include response time consistency of the information delivery system.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying statistical techniques to said captured data.

11. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 1 .

12. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 2 .

13. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 3 .

14. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 4 .

15. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 5 .

16. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 6 .

17. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 7 .

18. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 8 .

19. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 9 .

20. A machine-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 10 .
