Abstract

An implantable blood pressure regulator is provided. The blood pressure regulator includes at least one connection zone and an attenuation zone. The connection zone is suitable for connection to a body conduit, such as a blood vessel. The attenuation zone is movable from a first state to a second state in response to a physiological pressure spikes. The movement from the first state to the second state lowers a level of pressure or dampens a pressure spike in the body conduit.

Claims (34)

1. An implantable blood pressure regulator, comprising:

at least one connection zone for connection to a body conduit; and

an attenuation zone being movable from a first state to a second state in response to a physiological pressure spike within said body conduit;

wherein the movement from the first state to the second state lowers a level of pressure in the body conduit.

2. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein the attenuation zone occupies a greater volume in the body conduit when in the first state than the second state.

3. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein the attenuation zone comprises an expandable material and wherein a cross-sectional area of the attenuation zone is greater in the second state than in the first state.

4. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , further comprising a first attachment zone configured to be coupled with an upstream vascular segment and a second attachment zone configured to be coupled with a downstream vascular segment.

5. A method of treating a patient, comprising:

providing a variable volume structure;

placing the variable volume structure in pressure communication with the patients' vasculature such that the volume of the structure is reduced from a first volume to a second volume in response to a pressure spike in the vessel to reduce the magnitude of the pressure spike.

6. A method of treating a patient, comprising:

providing a conduit having first and second ends and an attenuation zone disposed therebetween;

configuring the attenuation zone to expand from a first volume to a second volume in response to a pressure spike in the vessel; and

coupling at least one of the first and second ends of the conduit with the patient's vasculature.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first end and second ends are coupled with upstream and downstream portions of the patient's vasculature.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising contacting an interior wall of the vessel with the first and second ends of the conduit.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the first and second ends is expanded into contact with the interior wall of the vessel.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the attenuation zone has a first enlarged volume state corresponding to diastolic pressure and a second reduced volume state corresponding to systolic pressure.

11. The method of claim 6 , wherein said attenuation zone comprises a bellow having a first and second activation level.

12. The method of claim 6 , wherein said attenuation zone is configured to expand in response to an activation pressure to provide a cross-sectional area at least 10 percent larger than when not expanded.

13. The method of claim 6 , wherein said attenuation zone is configured to expand from a first resting volume to a second, expanded volume for carrying blood across a span of the attenuation zone.

14. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein the connection zone is a tube configured to be in fluid communication with a vessel through an opening in a wall of the vessel.

15. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein the attenuation zone is coupled to said connection zone with a pressure line and wherein said pressure line is filled with non-compressible liquid, saline, compressible gas, air, or carbon dioxide.

16. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein the attenuation zone comprises a first portion and second portion connected by a fluid flow path wherein said first portion is comprised of a material more compliant than said second portion.

17. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein the connection zone is expandable and operable to engage an interior wall of a vessel or organ.

18. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , further comprising an engagement feature for coupling said connection zone to a portion of a cardio vascular system.

19. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein said attenuation zone has a first enlarged volume state corresponding to diastolic pressure and a second reduced volume state corresponding to systolic pressure.

20. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of said regulator encircles a body conduit.

21. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein said attenuation zone comprises a bellow having a first and second activation level.

22. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 , wherein said attenuation zone is configured to expand in response to an activation pressure to provide a cross-sectional area at least 10 percent larger than available at a resting pressure.

23. The implantable blood pressure regulator of claim 1 ,wherein said attenuation zone is configured to expand from a first resting volume to a second, expanded volume for carrying blood across its length.

24. An implantable blood pressure regulator comprising:

at least one connection zone for connection to a body conduit; and

an attenuation zone being movable from a first state to a second state in response to a physiological pressure spike wherein the movement from the first state to the second state restricts the extent of the pressure increase due to said pressure spike.
