Abstract

Epoxy-based root canal dental compositions and root canal sealing dental filling systems including an epoxy-based root canal dental composition are described. The dental compositions include an epoxy polymer comprising a plurality of amide monomers, a plurality of diepoxide monomers and at least one fumed silica. In a preferred embodiment, the dental composition contains substantially no silicone or mineral oil.

8 . The dental composition of claim 1 , wherein said fumed silica is hydrophobic.

9 . The dental composition of claim 1 , wherein said fumed silica is present in an amount of about 1 to 5 percent by weight of said composition.

10 . The dental composition of claim 1 , wherein said fumed silica comprises 2.8 to 3.4 percent by weight of said composition.

11 . The dental composition of claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional ingredient selected from the group consisting of organic filler(s) which do not provide radiopacity, inorganic fillers which do not provide radiopacity, colorants, amines, diluents, catalysts, modifiers and antimicrobial agents.

12 . The dental composition of claim 1 , wherein said inorganic filler(s) provides radiopacity above 5 mm Al/mm dental composition.

13 . The dental composition of claim 11 , wherein said antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting of triclosan, chlorhexidine salts, and silver.

14 . The dental composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition has a viscosity between 2,500 and 100 poise at 25° C.

15 . A root canal sealing dental filling system, comprising:

a dental filling composition comprising a first component comprising a plurality of polymerizable organic amide monomers present in a mixed dental filling composition in an amount of about 5 to 70 percent by weight of said composition; and

a second component which can react with said first component to form a polymer, said second component comprising a plurality of polymerizable organic diepoxide monomers present in a mixed dental filling composition in a mixed an amount of about 5 to 70 percent by weight of said composition;

at least one of said first component or said second component further comprises at least one fumed silica present in an amount of about 1 to 10 percent by weight of said composition; and

a dual-chamber dispensing container for holding said dental filling composition and having said first component in a first chamber and said second component in a second chamber, each of said chambers having at least one orifice through which said first component may be removed from said first chamber and said second component can be removed from said second chamber.

16 . The root canal sealing dental system of claim 15 , wherein said dual-chamber device is capable of delivering said first component and said second component simultaneously in about a one-to-two ratio based on the weight, volume or number of molecules of each of said first component and said second component.

17 . The root canal sealing dental system of claim 15 , wherein said dual-chamber device is capable of delivering said first component and said second component simultaneously in about a one-to-one ratio based on the weight, volume or number of molecules of each of said first component and said second component.

18 . The root canal sealing dental system of claim 15 , wherein said dual-chamber device is a syringe.

19 . The root canal sealing dental system of claim 15 , wherein said dual-chamber device further comprises an automixer to facilitate mixing of said first component and said second component.
