Abstract

A cavity forming structure is introduced through a percutaneous access path into a selected bone having an interior volume occupied, at least in part, by cancellous bone, e.g., a vertebral body. A cavity is formed in the cancellous bone volume by manipulation of the cavity forming structure. Tissue is removed from within the cavity through the percutaneous access path.

Claims (42)

1 . A method comprising

introducing a cavity forming structure through a percutaneous access path into a selected bone having an interior volume occupied, at least in part, by cancellous bone,

forming a cavity in the cancellous bone volume by manipulation of the cavity forming structure, and

removing tissue from within the cavity through the percutaneous access path.

2 . A method according to claim 1

wherein tissue is removed through a lumen in the cavity forming structure.

3 . A method according to claim 1

further including fixation of the bone after removal of tissue.

4 . A method according to claim 1

selecting a vertebral body as the bone to be treated.

5 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the cavity forming structure comprises an expandable body that, by expansion, forms the cavity.

6 . A method according to claim 5

wherein the expandable body expands by inflation.

7 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the cavity forming structure includes an expandable mesh structure that, by expansion, forms the cavity.

8 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the tissue removed includes biological components.

9 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the tissue removed includes therapeutic biological components.

10 . A method according to claim 1 ,

wherein the tissue removed includes bone marrow.

11 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the tissue removed includes red blood cells.

12 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the tissue removed includes bone cells.

13 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the tissue removed includes immune-? cells.

14 . A method according to claim 1

further including using the tissue removed for a diagnostic purpose.

15 . A method according to claim 1

further including using the tissue removed for a therapeutic purpose.

16 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the selected bone comprises a vertebral body.

17 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the selected bone comprises a pelvis.

18 . A method according to claim 1

wherein the selected bone comprises a distal radius.

19 . A method according to claim 1

wherein removing tissue from within the cavity includes conveying a biological rinse liquid into the cavity to loosen biological components.

20 . A method according to claim 1

wherein removing tissue from within the cavity includes aspiration.
