Abstract

A novel alfalfa variety designated 53V52 and seed, plants and plant parts thereof. Methods for producing an alfalfa plant that comprise crossing alfalfa variety 53V52 with another alfalfa plant. Methods for producing an alfalfa plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into 53V52 through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the alfalfa seed, plant and plant part produced thereby. Hybrid alfalfa seed, plant or plant part produced by crossing alfalfa variety 53V52 or a trait conversion of 53V52 with another alfalfa line. Alfalfa lines derived from alfalfa variety 53V52, methods for producing other inbred alfalfa lines derived from alfalfa variety 53V52 and the alfalfa lines and their parts derived by the use of those methods.

Claims (25)

1. Seed of an Alfalfa Variety 53V52, representative seed of said line having been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-10465.

2. An alfalfa plant, or a part thereof, produced by growing the seed of claim 1 .

3. Pollen of the plant of claim 2 .

4. An ovule from the plant of claim 2 .

5. An alfalfa plant, or a part thereof, having all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of the plant of claim 2 .

6. A tissue culture of regenerable cells or regenerable protoplasts from the plant of claim 2 .

7. A tissue culture according to claim 6 , wherein a cell or protoplast of the tissue culture is obtained from a tissue or cell selected from the group consisting of leaves, roots, root tips, root hairs, anthers, pistils, stamens, pollen, ovules, flowers, seeds, embryos, stems, buds, cotyledons, hypocotyls, cells and protoplasts.

8. An alfalfa plant regenerated from the tissue culture of claim 6 , wherein the regenerated plant has all of the morphological and physiological characteristics of alfalfa variety 53V52, representative seed of said alfalfa variety having been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-10465.

9. An alfalfa plant with all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of alfalfa variety 53V52, wherein said alfalfa plant is produced by a tissue culture process using the alfalfa plant of claim 5 as a starting material for such a process.

10. A process for producing a first generation progeny alfalfa seed comprising crossing a first parent alfalfa plant with a second parent alfalfa plant and harvesting the resultant alfalfa seed, wherein said first parent alfalfa plant or said second parent alfalfa plant is the alfalfa plant of claim 2 .

11. A process for producing a herbicide resistant alfalfa plant comprising transforming the alfalfa plant of claim 2 with a transgene that confers herbicide resistance and wherein the transgene is expressed.

12. A herbicide resistant alfalfa plant produced by the method of claim 11 .

13. A process for producing an insect resistant alfalfa plant comprising transforming the alfalfa plant of claim 2 with a transgene that confers insect resistance and wherein the transgene is expressed.

14. An insect resistant alfalfa plant produced by the method of claim 13 .

15. A process for producing a disease resistant alfalfa plant comprising transforming the alfalfa plant of claim 2 with a transgene that confers disease resistance and wherein the transgene is expressed.

16. A disease resistant alfalfa plant produced by the method of claim 15 .

17. A process for producing an alfalfa plant with modified fatty acid or carbohydrate metabolism comprising transforming the soybean plant of claim 2 with a transgene encoding a protein selected from the group consisting of fructosyltransferase, levansucrase, alphaamylase, invertase and starch branching enzyme; or with an antisense of a stearyl-ACP desaturase gene and wherein the transgene is expressed.

18. An alfalfa plant produced by the method of claim 17 .

19. A process of introducing a desired trait into Alfalfa Variety 53V52 comprising:

(a) crossing 53V52 plants grown from 53V52 seed, representative seed of which has been deposited under ATCC Accession No: PTA-10465, with plants of another alfalfa variety that comprise a desired trait to produce F1 progeny plants, wherein the desired trait is selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, increased transformability, abiotic stress tolerance, herbicide resistance, insect resistance, disease resistance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids and altered carbohydrates;

(b) selecting F1 progeny plants that have the desired trait to produce selected F1 progeny plants;

(c) crossing the selected progeny plants with the 53V52 plants to produce backcross progeny plants;

(d) selecting for backcross progeny plants that have the desired trait and physiological and morphological characteristics of alfalfa variety 53V52 to produce selected backcross progeny plants; and

(e) repeating steps (c) and (d) three or more times in succession to produce selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants that comprise the desired trait and all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of alfalfa variety 53V52.

20. A plant produced by the process of claim 19 , wherein the plant has the desired trait and all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of Alfalfa Variety 53V52.
