Abstract

A medical device for delivery of a fluid to a patient from a line terminating in a tubing needle. The medical device includes a cannula assembly for coupling the fluid into a cannula that is inserted into the patient. The cannula assembly has a first locking element disposed in a fixed position with respect to the cannula. Coupling the line to the cannula assembly is an infusion flap. The infusion flap includes a second locking element for engaging the first locking element of the cannula assembly and a lift tab for disconnecting the infusion flap from the cannula assembly. Coupling of the first and second locking elements requires initial mating of the infusion flap and cannula assembly followed by locking through rotation of the infusion flap with respect to the cannula assembly.

Claims (20)

1. A medical device comprising:

a pump housing including a barrel therein, the barrel having a longitudinal axis and a locking tab in the pump housing; and

a hub for retaining a replaceable reservoir in the barrel in the pump housing, the hub comprising:

a first end including a first end face disposed transverse to a hub axis, the first end face including a port disposed along the hub axis, the port having tubing affixed thereto for passage of fluid from the reservoir, the first end face having formed therein a grip to facilitate rotation of the hub about the hub axis;

a second end including a first male element having an external engagement feature for engaging with a corresponding female element having an internal engagement feature on the reservoir to lock the hub to the reservoir and a second male element for engaging with a corresponding element of the pump housing to retain the reservoir in the barrel when (a) the hub is placed in the pump housing so that the hub axis corresponds with the barrel axis and (b) the hub is rotated; and

a controller including a mechanical protrusion that is a flange and is adapted to dislodge the locking tab on the barrel in the pump housing to transition a fluid delivery device within the pump housing from a reservoir load position to an operate position upon a rotation of the hub about the hub axis.

2. A hub according to claim 1 wherein the grip is a cam.

3. The hub according to claim 1 , additionally comprising a female luer connection disposed within the first male element for engaging a corresponding male luer connection of the reservoir.

4. The hub according to claim 1 , wherein the controller allows the barrel to rotate to bring rod threads of a plunger rod disposed within the barrel into and out of mechanical engagement with a drive screw of the fluid delivery device.

5. A medical device comprising:

a pump housing including a barrel therein, the barrel having a longitudinal axis and a locking tab in the pump housing; and

a hub for retaining a replaceable reservoir in the barrel in the pump housing, the hub comprising:

a first end including a first end face disposed transverse to a hub axis, the first end face including a port disposed along the hub axis, the port adapted to have tubing attached thereto for passage of fluid from the reservoir, the first end face having formed therein a grip to facilitate rotation of the hub about the hub axis;

a second end including a first male element having an external engagement feature for engaging with a corresponding female element having an internal engagement feature on the reservoir to lock the hub to the reservoir and a second male element for engaging with a corresponding element of the pump housing to retain the reservoir in the barrel when (a) the hub is placed in the pump housing so that the hub axis corresponds with the barrel axis and (b) the hub is rotated; and

a controller including a mechanical protrusion that is a flange and is adapted to dislodge the locking tab on the barrel in the pump housing to transition a fluid delivery device within the pump housing from a reservoir load position to an operate position upon a rotation of the hub about the hub axis.

6. The hub according to claim 5 , wherein the port is adapted to have the tubing removably attached thereto.

7. The hub according to claim 6 , wherein the port includes a luer connection for attaching the tubing thereto.

8. The hub according to claim 5 , wherein the grip is a cam.

9. The hub according to claim 5 , additionally comprising a female luer connection disposed within the first male element for engaging a corresponding male luer connection of the reservoir.

10. The hub according to claim 5 , wherein the controller allows the barrel to rotate to bring rod threads of a plunger rod disposed within the barrel into and out of mechanical engagement with a drive screw of the fluid delivery device.
