Abstract

Various computer-implemented services are disclosed for assisting users in selecting items from an electronic catalog, and for selecting merchants with which to conduct transactions. One such service detects when a first user accesses a web page associated with a particular merchant, and then attempts to identify, from a set of users who are affiliated with the first user, a second user who has engaged in business with this merchant. If such a second user is identified, the service notifies the first user, and provides an option or information for the first user to contact the second user regarding the merchant.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein providing an option for the first user to send a message to the second user comprises detecting that the second user is online, and providing an option to the first user to send an instant message to the second user.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the community is an implicit membership community.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the implicit membership community is based on email addresses of users.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the merchant is a seller on an auction site, and said action associated with the merchant is an action performed by the first user while browsing the auction site.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the community is an explicit membership community of which the first user is a member.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the community is a private community.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the community is based on an electronic address book of the first user.

16. A computer system comprising a processor, said computer system programmed to perform a method comprising:

identifying a community associated with a first user;

identifying a second user who is a member of the community and that has engaged in business with a merchant, said second user being a user who has opted to expose to the first user identities of merchants with which the second user has engaged in business, as reflected within preference data stored for the second user; and

in response to the first user performing an action associated with the merchant, doing at least one of the following: (a) electronically notifying the first user of contact information of the second user to allow the first user to communicate with the second user about the merchant, and (b) providing an option for the first user to send a message to the second user regarding the merchant.

17. A computer-readable medium having stored thereon a computer program which, when executed by a computer system, causes the computer system to perform a method comprising the steps of

identifying a community associated with a first user;

identifying a second user that is a member of the community and that has engaged in business with a particular merchant, said second user being a user who has opted to expose to the first user identities of merchants with which the second user has engaged in business, as reflected within preference data stored for the second user; and

in response to the first user performing an action associated with the merchant, doing at least one of the following: (a) electronically notifying the first user of contact information of the second user to allow the first user to communicate with the second user about the merchant; and (b) providing an option for the first user to send a message to the second user regarding the merchant.

18. The computer system of claim 16 , wherein the method further comprises, in response to the first user performing said action associated with the merchant, electronically notify the first user that the second user has engaged in business with the merchant.

19. The computer system of claim 16 , wherein the method comprises electronically notifying the first user of contact information of the second user.

20. The computer system of claim 19 , wherein the contact information includes an email alias for permitting anonymous communications.

21. The computer system of claim 19 , wherein electronically notifying the first user of contact information of the second user comprises personalizing a web page requested by the first user.

22. The computer system of claim 21 , wherein the merchant is a seller on an auction site, and the web page is a page of said online auction site that displays an auction of the seller.

23. The computer system of claim 16 , wherein the method comprises providing an option for the first user to send a message to the second user regarding the merchant.

24. The computer system of claim 23 , wherein providing an option for the first user to send a message to the second user comprises detecting that the second user is online, and providing an option to the first user to send an instant message to the second user.

25. The computer system of claim 16 , wherein the community is an implicit membership community.

26. The computer system of claim 25 , wherein the implicit membership community is based on email addresses of users.
