Abstract

A method and system for capturing missed communications is provided. An enhanced real-time communication system receives a communication from an initiating participant for a receiving participant that is not available. The enhanced real-time communication system detects that the receiving participant missed the received communication from the initiating participant. Upon detecting that the receiving participant missed the communication, the enhanced real-time communication system stores the missed communication for later retrieval by the receiving participant.

Claims (22)

1. A computer system for capturing missed instant messages, comprising:

a communication receiving component for receiving communications from an initiating participant directed to a recipient, the communications being instant messages of a conversation;

a detect missed communications component for detecting that the recipient missed a received communication;

a component for, after detecting that the recipient missed the communication, assigning a unique conversation identifier to the missed communication;

a store missed communications component for storing an indication that the missed communication was missed along with the assigned unique conversation identifier as a missed communication electronic mail message wherein multiple missed communications from the initiating participant to the recipient are stored in the electronic mail message along with a link for opening an instant messaging conversation with the initiating participant so that the recipient and the initiating participant can continue where the conversation left off; and

a component for, when the recipient indicates to reply to the missed communication electronic mail message with a new electronic mail message, assigning the unique conversation identifier of the missed communication to the new electronic mail message so that the new electronic mail message can be identified as part of the same conversation as the missed communication.

2. The system of claim 1 including a user interface component for indicating to the recipient that a communication has been missed.

3. The system of claim 1 including a user interface component for indicating to the initiating participant that a communication has been missed.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the detect missed communications component determines that the recipient dismissed a notification.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the detect missed communications component determines that the recipient closed a conversation window related to the communication.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the detect missed communications component determines that the initiating participant closed a conversation related to the communication before the recipient responded to the communication.

7. A computer-readable storage device containing computer-executable instructions, that are not being transmitted via a signal, for controlling a computing device to capture missed instant messages, the computer-executable instructions for performing a method comprising:

receiving communications from an initiating participant directed to a recipient, the communications being instant messages of a conversation;

detecting that the recipient missed a received communication;

after detecting that the recipient missed the communication, assigning a unique conversation identifier to the missed communication;

storing an indication that the missed communication was missed along with the assigned unique conversation identifier as a missed communication electronic mail message wherein multiple missed communications from the initiating participant to the recipient are stored in the electronic mail message along with a link for opening an instant messaging conversation with the initiating participant so that the recipient and the initiating participant can continue where the conversation left off; and

when the recipient indicates to reply to the missed communication electronic mail message with a new electronic mail message, assigning the unique conversation identifier of the missed communication to the new electronic mail message so that the new electronic mail message can be identified as part of the same conversation as the missed communication.

8. The computer-readable storage device of claim 7 including indicating to the recipient that a communication has been missed.

9. The computer-readable storage device of claim 7 including indicating to the initiating participant that a communication has been missed.

10. The computer-readable storage device of claim 7 wherein the detecting includes determining that the recipient dismissed a notification.

11. The computer-readable storage device of claim 7 wherein the detecting includes determining that the recipient closed a conversation window related to the communication.

12. The computer-readable storage device of claim 7 wherein the detecting includes determining that the initiating participant closed a conversation related to the communication before the recipient responded to the communication.
