Abstract

A cash dispensing automated banking machine includes a card reader associated with a card slot. An anti-fraud sensing device is able to sense ambient light or generated radiation that passes to the sensing device through the card reader slot. The installation of an unauthorized card reading device on the machine changes at least one property sensed by the sensing device. A controller in the machine receives signals from the sensing device, and determines if an unauthorized card reading device has been installed.

Claims (49)

1. An automated banking machine apparatus comprising:

a housing;

a cash dispenser in operatively supported connection with the housing;

a user interface in operatively supported connection with the housing, the user interface including at least one input device and at least one output device, wherein the at least one input device includes a card reader, wherein the card reader is in operative connection with a card reader slot including an opening externally of the housing;

at least one sensor disposed in the housing adjacent the slot, wherein the at least one sensor is operative to sense at least one radiation property, such that positioning an unauthorized card reading device externally of the opening adjacent the slot, causes at least one change in at least one radiation property sensed by the at least one sensor;

at least one controller, wherein the at least one controller is in operative connection with the at least one sensor, wherein the at least one controller is operative to generate at least one signal responsive to the at least one sensor sensing the at least one change.

The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one controller is in operative connection with at least one data store, wherein the at least one data store includes data corresponding to at least one radiation property that the at least one sensor is operative to sense, and wherein the at least one controller is operative to compare at least one radiation property sensed by the at least one sensor and data stored in the at least one data store.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the at least one property includes intensity of radiation.

4. The apparatus according to claim 3 and further comprising:

at least one radiation emitter, wherein the at least one radiation emitter is operative to emit radiation, wherein the at least one sensor is operative to sense radiation emitted by the at least one radiation emitter.

5. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the at least one radiation emitter is operative to emit visible light.

6. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the at least one radiation emitter is in operative connection with the at least one controller, and wherein the at least one controller is operative to cause the at least one emitter to emit radiation at predetermined times during operation of the apparatus.

7. The apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the predetermined times are coordinated with operation of the card reader.

8. The apparatus according to claim 3 further comprising:

an oscillator mounted in operatively supported connection with the housing, wherein the oscillator is in operative connection with the at least one controller, wherein the at least one controller is operative to cause the oscillator to vibrate at least a portion of the machine.

9. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the at least one property includes intensity of ambient light passing through the opening to the at least one sensor.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 and further comprising a card housing, wherein the card reader slot extends in the card housing, and further comprising a reflective surface bounding at least one side of the slot.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the at least one sensor is positioned on a side of the slot opposite the reflective surface.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein magnetic stripes on cards that pass through the slot are positioned on a side of the slot opposite the reflective surface.

13. The apparatus according to claim 12 and further comprising:

a radio frequency (RF) signal sensor on the banking machine operative to sense RF signals adjacent and external of the machine, wherein the RF signal sensor is in operative connection with the at least one controller, and wherein the at least one controller is operative to determine if the sensed RF signals correspond to operation of the machine.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 and further comprising:

at least one RF emitter, wherein the at least one emitter is in operative connection with the at least one controller, wherein the at least one controller is operative to cause the at least one emitter to operate to output RF signals adapted to interfere with signals sensed by the RF signal sensor.

15. A method comprising:

a) sensing with at least one sensor located within a housing of a cash dispensing automated banking machine, a detectable magnitude of at least one property of radiation reaching the at least one sensor through a card reader slot associated with a card reader of the machine;

b) evaluating the magnitude sensed in (a), through operation of at least one controller;

c) responsive at least in part to the evaluation indicating an unacceptable change in detectable magnitudes sensed by the at least one sensor, providing at least one output associated with the indication from the automated banking machine.

16. The method according to claim 15 wherein evaluating the magnitude in (b) includes:

comparing the magnitude and data stored in at least one data store through operation of the controller.

17. The method according to claim 16 wherein in (c) the at least one output indicates the presence of an unauthorized card reading device adjacent the card reader.

18. The method according to claim 17 wherein sensing the magnitude in (a) includes sensing a level of ambient light reaching the at least one sensor through the slot.

19. The method according to claim 17 wherein sensing the magnitude in (a) includes sensing a level of radiation emitted from at least one radiation emitter mounted in operatively supported connection with the housing.

20. The method according to claim 19 wherein the emitted radiation includes visible light.

21. The method according to claim 17 and further comprising:

d) imparting vibration to at least a portion of the housing through operation of at least one oscillator in operatively supported connection with the housing.

22. The method according to claim 21 wherein imparting vibration in (d) is caused responsive to operation of the controller responsive to the comparison in (b).

23. The method according to claim 21 and further comprising:

e) receiving at least one input through the card reader of the banking machine;

wherein in (d) the vibration is carried out during at least a portion of (e).

24. The method according to claim 15 wherein (a) includes sensing radiation reflected from a reflective surface bounding at least one side of the slot.

25. A method comprising:

a) sensing with at least one sensor located in an automated banking machine, a first detectable intensity of a particular radiation type reaching the at least one sensor through a user interface opening;

b) subsequent to step (a), sensing with the at least one sensor, a second detectable intensity of the particular radiation type reaching the at least one sensor through the user interface opening, wherein the second detectable intensity differs from the first detectable intensity; and

c) responsive at least in part to step (b), operating at least one computer to cause generation of at least one signal associated with an unauthorized change in detectable intensity sensed by the at least one sensor.

The apparatus according to claim 25 wherein the user interface opening comprises a card slot, wherein step (a) includes sensing a first intensity of the particular radiation type passing through the card slot from outside the user interface, wherein step (b) includes sensing a second intensity of the particular radiation type passing through the card slot from outside the user interface, and wherein in step (c) the at least one signal is associated with detection of an unauthorized device adjacent the card slot.

27. The apparatus according to claim 26 wherein the particular radiation type comprises visible light,

wherein step (a) includes sensing a first intensity of visible light passing through the card slot,

wherein step (b) includes sensing a second intensity of visible light passing through the card slot, wherein the second intensity of visible light is less than the first intensity of visible light, and

wherein in step (c) the at least one signal is associated with detection of an unauthorized card reader device.
