Abstract

The present invention relates to polyurea composition coated trailers and methods of making the same. In an embodiment, the present invention is directed to a trailer comprising a frame having a front side and a back side, at least one axle coupled to the frame, a plurality of wheels coupled to the at least one axle, and a polyurea coating, wherein the polyurea coating encapsulates at least a portion of the frame. In an embodiment, the present invention is directed to a method for protecting a metal trailer from corrosion comprising cleaning the surfaces of a metal trailer and applying a layer of a polyurea composition to the surfaces of the metal trailer.

Claims (59)

1. A boat trailer comprising:

a frame having a front end and a back end, at least a portion of the frame including first and second spaced-apart side rails having lengths that extend between the front and back ends;

at least one axle coupled to the frame;

a plurality of wheels coupled to the at least one axle;

a polyurea coating, wherein the polyurea coating encapsulates at least a portion of each of the first and second side rails, and wherein the polyurea coating comprises a polyurea composition; and

a paint coating disposed on the polyurea coating.

2. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein at least sections of the first and second side rails diverge from one another as the sections of the first and second side rails extend from the front end toward the back of the frame.

3. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises a plurality of transverse frame members that extend transversely between the first and second side rails, wherein at least portions of the transverse frame members are encapsulated by the polyurea coating.

4. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the at least one axle is encapsulated by the polyurea coating.

5. The trailer of claim 1 , further comprising a winch stand coupled to the frame, wherein at least a portion of the winch stand is encapsulated by the polyurea coating.

6. The trailer of claim 3 , further comprising a boat hull support structure coupled to the frame.

7. The trailer of claim 6 , wherein the boat hull support structure comprises a plurality of hull skids mounted on a plurality of skid supports attached to the transverse frame members, wherein at least portions of the skid supports are encapsulated by the polyurea coating.

8. The trailer of claim 1 , further comprising means for supporting a boat hull.

9. The trailer of claim 1 , further comprising a hitch bar positioned adjacent the front end of the frame, wherein at least a portion of the hitch bar is encapsulated by the polyurea coating.

10. The boat trailer of claim 1 , wherein the paint coating comprises a polyurethane component.

11. A boat trailer comprising:

a frame having a front end and a back end, at least a portion of the frame including first and second spaced-apart side rails having lengths that extend between the front and back ends of the frame;

at least one axle coupled to the frame;

a plurality of wheels coupled to the at least one axle;

a layer of coating that encapsulates at least a portion of each of the first and second side rails, the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and a reactive amine; and

a paint coating disposed on the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

12. A boat trailer according to claim 11 , wherein the reactive amine includes an aliphatic or an aromatic amine resin.

A boat trailer according to claim 11 , further comprising a boat hull support structure coupled to the frame, the boat hull support structure including a plurality of hull skids supported on skid supports, at least a portion of each skid support being encapsulated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

14. A boat trailer according to claim 11 , wherein the frame is constructed from metal and the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine is applied to a bare metal surface of the frame.

15. A boat trailer according to claim 11 , wherein at least sections of the first and second side rails diverge from one another as the sections of the first and second rails extend from the front end toward the back end of the frame.

16. A boat trailer according to claim 11 , wherein the frame comprises a plurality of transverse frame members that extend transversely between the first and second side rails, wherein at least portions of the transverse frame members are encapsulated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

17. A boat trailer according to claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the at least one axle is encapsulated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

18. A boat trailer according to claim 11 , further comprising a winch stand coupled to the frame, wherein at least a portion of the winch stand is encapsulated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

19. A boat trailer according to claim 11 , further comprising a hitch bar positioned adjacent the front of the frame, wherein at least a portion of the hitch bar is encapsulated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

20. A trailer comprising:

a frame having a front side and a back side;

at least one axle coupled to the frame;

a plurality of wheels coupled to the at least one axle;

a polyurea coating, wherein the polyurea coating encapsulates at least a portion of the frame and comprises a polyurea composition; and

a paint coating, wherein the paint coating is disposed on the polyurea coating.

21. The boat trailer of claim 20 , wherein the paint coating comprises a polyurethane composition.

22. A boat trailer comprising:

a frame having a front end and a back end, the frame including first and second spaced-apart side rails having lengths that extend between the front and back ends of the frame, the first and second side rails having portions that diverge from one another as the portions of the first and second side rails extend from the front end toward the back end of the frame, the frame also including a plurality of transverse frame members that extend across a width of the frame between the first and second side rails;

a boat hull support structure coupled to the frame;

at least one axle coupled to the frame;

a plurality of wheels coupled to the at least one axle;

a winch stand coupled to the frame;

a hitch bar positioned at a front end of the frame;

a polyurea coating that encapsulates the first and second side rails, the transverse frame members, the axle, the winch stand and the hitch bar, wherein the polyurea coating includes at least isocyanate and a reactive amine; and

a top coat layer of paint coating provided over the polyurea coating.

23. The trailer of claim 1 , further comprising step member supports on which a step is supported, the step member supports projecting outwardly from at least one of the first and second rails, and the step member supports being coated by the polyurea coating.

24. The trailer of claim 1 , further comprising fender supports on which fenders are supported, the fender supports projecting outwardly from the first and second rails, and the fender supports being coated by the polyurea coating.

25. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the portions of the first and second side rails encapsulated by the polyurea coating have a generally rectangular cross-sectional shape.

26. The trailer of claim 1 , wherein the portions of the first and second side rails encapsulated by the polyurea coating have a generally C-shaped cross-sectional shape.

The trailer of claim 11 , further comprising step member supports on which a step is supported, the step member supports projecting outwardly from at least one of the first and second rails, and the step member supports being coated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

28. The trailer of claim 11 , further comprising fender supports on which fenders are supported, the fender supports projecting outwardly from the first and second rails, and the fender supports being coated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

29. The trailer of claim 11 , wherein the portions of the first and second side rails encapsulated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine have a generally rectangular cross-sectional shape.

30. The trailer of claim 11 , wherein the portions of the first and second side rails encapsulated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine have a generally C-shaped cross-sectional shape.

31. The trailer of claim 22 , wherein the polyurea coating comprises a polyurea composition.

The boat trailer of claim 11 , wherein the boat trailer defines a central longitudinal axis that extends between the front and back ends of the frame at a location between the first and second side rails, wherein the first and second side rails have generally C-shaped transverse cross-sections encapsulated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine, the C-shaped cross-sections having open sides that face toward the central longitudinal axis.

The boat trailer of claim 11 , wherein the first and second side rails have enclosed rectangular transverse cross-sections, and wherein the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine extends completely around rectangular perimeters of the rectangular transverse cross-sections.

The trailer of claim 11 , further comprising step member supports positioned adjacent to the front end of the frame on which a step is supported, the step member supports projecting outwardly from at least one of the first and second rails, and the step member supports being coated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine, and also further comprising fender supports on which fenders are supported, the fender supports projecting outwardly from the first and second rails, and the fender supports being coated by the layer of coating including at least isocyanate and the reactive amine.

35. The trailer of claim 11 , wherein the paint coating comprises a polyurethane component.

36. The trailer of claim 22 , wherein the top coat layer of paint coating comprises a polyurethane component.
