Abstract

A method of cleaning papermaking felt by applying a low concentration of a cleaning solution through the oscillating needle nozzles. The detergent is applied intermittently while paper is being manufactured. Each cleaning period lasts for at least the length of time required for the nozzles to cover the entire surface of the felt, and preferably twice that period of time. The application of cleaning solution is then discontinued for a period of time, generally equal to the time the cleaning detergent is applied to the felt. This cycle is repeated continuously as the paper is being manufactured. The chemistry of the cleaning solution can be changed, for example, from acidic to basic, alternately, to enhance cleaning performance.

Claims (33)

1. A method of cleaning papermaking felt on-the-run while said felt is being used to make paper without interfering with the papermaking process comprising:

in a first cleaning step, applying a cleaning agent onto said felt through high pressure oscillating nozzles at a pressure range of about 150 to about 250 psi for a first period of time while said felt is moving;

said first period of time being sufficient for said nozzles to uniformly cover the entire surface of said felt;

discontinuing said first cleaning step for a period of time at least equal to said first period of time; and

subsequently repeating said first cleaning step,

wherein said first and subsequent cleaning steps remove soils from said felt in order to restore de-watering capability that may be hampered by said soils.

2. The method claimed in claim 1 , wherein the method of claim 1 is repeated continuously while said felt is being used to make paper.

3. The method claimed in claim 1 , wherein different cleaning compositions are used in alternating cleaning steps.

4. The method claimed in claim 3 , wherein a first cleaning composition comprises an alkaline cleaning composition and a second cleaning composition comprises an acidic cleaning composition.

5. The method claimed in claim 3 , wherein a first cleaning composition is an anionic cleaning composition and a second cleaning composition is a nonionic cleaning composition.

6. The method claimed in claim 1 , wherein from about 200 ppm to about 600 ppm of cleaning composition on a 100% actives basis are applied through said oscillating nozzles.

7. The method claimed in claim 1 , wherein at least one cleaning step is conducted during each hour.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nozzles are needle nozzles.

9. A method of cleaning papermaking felt on-the-run while said papermaking felt is used to make paper without interfering with the papermaking process comprising:

continuously pumping water through a needle shower onto said papermaking felt at a pressure of about 150 psi to about 250 psi;

periodically injecting cleaning chemical through said needle shower as water is pumped through said needle shower; and

periodically discontinuing adding cleaning chemical to said needle shower,

wherein the pumping water and injecting cleaning chemical steps remove soils from said felt in order to restore de-watering capability that may be hampered by said soils.

10. The method claimed in claim 9 , wherein the needle shower is an oscillating needle shower.

11. A method of cleaning papermaking felt on-the-run while said papermaking felt is used to make paper without interfering with the papermaking process comprising:

continuously pumping water through a needle shower onto said papermaking felt at a pressure between about 150 psi and about 250 psi;

injecting sequentially one of a plurality of different cleaning compositions through said needle shower,

wherein the pumping water and injecting cleaning compositions steps remove soils from said felt in order to restore de-watering capability that may be hampered by said soils.

12. The method claimed in claim 11 , wherein two different cleaning compositions are injected through said needle shower.

13. The method claimed in claim 12 , wherein a first cleaning composition is alkaline and a second cleaning composition is acidic.

14. The method claimed in claim 11 , wherein no cleaning composition is injected for a period of time between an injection of a first cleaning composition and a subsequent injection of a second different cleaning composition.

15. The method claimed in claim 11 , wherein the needle shower is an oscillating needle shower.

16. A method of cleaning papermaking felt while the felt is being used to make paper comprising:

providing a plurality of oscillating needle nozzles to produce a shower of high pressure liquid at a pressure of about 150 psi to 250 psi, said high pressure liquid containing one or more of a first chemical, a second chemical, or no chemical;

controlling the injection of either a first chemical, a second chemical, or no chemical into the high pressure liquid via a control unit having a timer; and

pumping the high pressure liquid through the oscillating needle showers onto the papermaking felt without a chemical;

pumping the high pressure liquid through the oscillating needle showers onto the papermaking felt with one or more of the first chemical and the second chemical.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first chemical is a first cleaning solution and the second chemical is a second cleaning solution.
