Abstract

A fullerene-based proton conductor including a proton conductive functional group connected to the fullerene by an at least partially fluorinated spacer molecule. Also, a polymer including at least two of the proton conductors that are connected by a linking molecule. Further, an electrochemical device employing the polymer as a proton exchange membrane, whereby the device is able to achieve a self-humidifying characteristic.

Claims (22)

1. A method of making a proton conductive polymer, comprising:

combining a fullerene with a spacer-molecule precursor wherein each of said spacer-molecule precursors is an at least partially fluorinated molecule; forming a plurality of first reaction products;

combining said first reaction products with a linking-molecule precursor so as to form a second reaction product, wherein the second reaction product includes at least two of said first reaction products that are connected by a linking molecule formed from the linking-molecule precursor;

protonating the second reaction products; and

forming a polymeric compound including a proton conductive functional group attached to one or more fullerenes by the spacer molecule that is at least partially fluorinated.

2. The method of making a proton conductive polymer according to claim 1 , wherein said step of protonating said second reaction product includes hydrolyzing said second reaction product to form a third reaction product, and then protonating the third reaction product.

3. The method of making a proton conductive polymer according to claim 1 , wherein said fullerenes are C 60 and said spacer-molecule precursors are I—CF 2 —CF 2 —O—CF 2 —CF 2 —SO 2 F.

4. The method of making a proton conductive polymer according to claim 1 wherein the step of forming the first reaction product includes reacting one equivalent amount of C 60 and twenty-four equivalents amount of I—CF 2 —CF 2 —O—CF 2 —CF 2 —SO 2 F in a solution of 1:1 C 6 F 6 /CS 2 at a temperature of about 200° C. for about 94 hours, wherein said first reaction product comprises the general formula C 60 —(CF 2 —CF 2 —O—CF 2 —CF 2 —SO 2 F) n , where n is a natural number up to about 8.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the step of forming the second reaction product includes said linking-molecule precursor having the general formula I—(CF 2 ) 8 —I, wherein said second reaction product comprise a polymer of the general formula

[—C 60 —(CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 )—] y

|

(CF 2 —CF2—O—CF 2 —CF 2 —SO 2 F) y , where y is a natural number of at least two.

6. The method of making a proton conductive polymer according to claim 4 , wherein said step of protonating said second reaction product includes hydrolyzing said second reaction product with NaOH so as to form a third reaction product of the general formula:

[—C 60 —(CF 2 —CF 2 —CF′ 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 )—] y

|

(CF 2 —CF 2 —O—CF 2 —CF 2 —SO 3 Na) n where n and y are natural numbers.

7. The method of making a proton conductive polymer according to claim 4 , wherein the step of protonating said third reaction product includes forming a polymer having the general formula

[—C 60 —(CF 2 —CF 2 —CF′ 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 —CF 2 )—] y

|

(CF 2 —CF 2 —O—CF 2 —CF 2 —SO 3 H) n where n and y are natural numbers.

8. The method of making a proton conductive polymer according to claim 1 , wherein said linking-molecule precursor comprises at least partially fluorinated molecules, and further wherein said linking molecule comprises at least partially fluorinated molecules.

9. The method of making a proton conductive polymer according to claim 1 , wherein said linking molecule comprises the general formula —C 6 F 12 —.
