Abstract

Communication networks and associated methods are disclosed that provide third party charging for SIP sessions. A communication network of the invention comprises a session control function (e.g., an IMS CSCF), a network node (e.g., an IMS application server), and a charging system. The session control function serves a SIP session initiated between a first and second party. The network node identifies a third party to charge for the session. The network node includes a third party identifier for the third party in a SIP message for the session, and transmits the SIP message to the session control function. The session control function generates a charging message, maps the third party identifier to the charging message, and transmits the charging message that includes the third party identifier to the charging system. The charging system then initiates charging of the session to the third party based on the third party identifier.

Claims (56)

1. A communication network adapted to provide third party charging for SIP sessions, the communication network comprising:

a session control function adapted to serve a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) session initiated between a first party and a second party;

a network node adapted to identify a third party to charge for the SIP session, to include a third party identifier for the third party in a SIP message for the session, and to transmit the SIP message to the session control function;

the session control function is further adapted to receive the SIP message, to generate a charging message for the session based on the SIP message, to map the third party identifier in the SIP message to the charging message, and to transmit the charging message that includes the third party identifier over a charging interface; and

a charging system adapted to receive the charging message that includes the third party identifier over the charging interface, and to initiate charging for the session to the third party based on the third party identifier.

2. The communication network of claim 1 wherein the network node is further adapted to include the third party identifier in a P-DCS-Billing-Info header of the SIP message.

3. The communication network of claim 1 wherein:

the charging interface comprises a Diameter interface; and

the session control function is further adapted to generate a Diameter charging message, and to map the third party identifier to a new attribute value pair (AVP) in the Diameter charging message.

4. The communication network of claim 1 wherein the charging message comprises one of a Diameter Accounting Request (ACR) message or a Credit Control Request (CCR) message.

5. The communication network of claim 1 wherein the charging system is further adapted to:

generate a Charging Data Record (CDR) for the SIP session; and

map the third party identifier from the charging message to a field in the CDR.

6. The communication network of claim 1 wherein:

the charging system is adapted to provide offline charging for the SIP session, the charging system comprising:

a Charging Collection Function (CCF) adapted to receive the charging message that includes the third party identifier, to generate a Charging Data Record (CDR) for the SIP session, to map the third party identifier to a new field in the CDR, and to transmit the CDR; and

a billing system adapted to receive the CDR, and to charge the third party for the SIP session based on the third party identifier.

7. The communication network of claim 1 wherein:

the charging system is adapted to provide offline charging for the SIP session, the charging system comprising:

a Charging Data Function (CDF)/Charging Gateway Function (CGF) adapted to receive the charging message that includes the third party identifier, to generate a Charging Data Record (CDR) for the SIP session, to map the third party identifier to a new field in the CDR, and to transmit the CDR; and

a billing system adapted to receive the CDR, and to charge the third party for the SIP session based on the third party identifier.

8. The communication network of claim 1 wherein:

the charging system is adapted to provide online charging for the SIP session, the charging system comprising:

an Online Charging System (OCS) adapted to receive the charging message that includes the third party identifier, to manage online charging to the third party based on the third party identifier, to generate a Charging Data Record (CDR) for the SIP session, to map the third party identifier to a new field in the CDR, and to transmit the CDR to a billing system.

A method of operating a communication network to provide third party charging for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) transactions, wherein the communication network includes a session control function adapted to serve a SIP transaction between a first party and a second party, a network node, and a charging system, the method comprising:

identifying a third party to charge for the SIP transaction in the network node for a SIP session initiated between a first party and a second party;

including a third party identifier for the third party in a SIP message for the transaction;

transmitting the SIP message from the network node to the session control function;

generating a charging message for the transaction based on the SIP message in the session control function;

mapping the third party identifier in the SIP message to the charging message;

transmitting the charging message that includes the third party identifier from the session control function to the charging system over a charging interface; and

initiating charging for the transaction to the third party in the charging system based on the third party identifier.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the network node is further adapted to include the third party identifier in a P-DCS-Billing-Info header of the SIP message.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the charging interface comprises a Diameter interface, and the step of mapping the third party identifier in the SIP message to the charging message comprises mapping the third party identifier to a new attribute value pair (AVP) in a Diameter charging message.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the charging message comprises one of a Diameter Accounting Request (ACR) message or a Credit Control Request (CCR) message.

13. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

generating a Charging Data Record (CDR) for the transaction in the charging system; and

mapping the third party identifier to a new field in the CDR.

14. An IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network adapted to provide third party charging for IMS sessions, the IMS network comprising:

a call session control function (CSCF) adapted to serve a session initiated between a first party and a second party;

an application server adapted to identify a third party to charge for the session, to include a third party identifier for the third party in a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) message for the session, and to transmit the SIP message to the CSCF;

the CSCF is further adapted to receive the SIP message, to generate a Diameter charging message for the session based on the SIP message, to map the third party identifier in the SIP message to the Diameter charging message, and to transmit the Diameter charging message that includes the third party identifier;

a charging function adapted to receive the Diameter charging message that includes the third party identifier, to generate a Charging Data Record (CDR) for the session, to map the third party identifier to a field in the CDR, and to transmit the CDR; and

a billing system adapted to receive the CDR that includes the third party identifier, and to charge the third party for the session based on the third party identifier.

15. The IMS network of claim 14 wherein the application server is further adapted to include the third party identifier in a P-DCS-Billing-Info header of the SIP message.

16. The IMS network of claim 14 wherein the CSCF is further adapted to map the third party identifier to a new attribute value pair (AVP) in the Diameter charging message.

17. The IMS network of claim 14 wherein the charging function is further adapted to map the third party identifier to a new field in the CDR.

18. A method of operating a call session control function (CSCF) of an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network, the method comprising:

receiving a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) message from a network node for a session initiated between a first party and a second party that includes a third party identifier identifying a third party to charge for the session;

generating a Diameter charging message for the session based on the SIP message in the CSCF;

mapping the third party identifier in the SIP message to the Diameter charging message; and

transmitting the Diameter charging message that includes the third party identifier to a charging system in order to charge the third party for the session.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein mapping the third party identifier comprises:

identifying the third party identifier in a P-DCS-Billing-Info header of the SIP message; and

mapping the third party identifier from the P-DCS-Billing-Info header to a new attribute value pair (AVP) in a Diameter charging message.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the charging message comprises one of a Diameter Accounting Request (ACR) message or a Credit Control Request (CCR) message.
