Abstract

Method for obtaining information about tires on a vehicle includes arranging a tire monitor on each tire, arranging an interrogator on the vehicle, arranging antennas on the vehicle, each antenna being spaced apart from one another and associated with some tires and further being spaced different distances from the tire monitors on the associated tires, wirelessly transmitting initiation signals from the interrogator to each tire monitor through the antennas to cause each tire monitor to provide signals containing information about one or more properties of the tire on which the tire monitor is arranged, receiving the signals provided by the tire monitors at the antennas, directing the signals from the antennas to the interrogator, and determining a location of each tire monitor and thus a location of a tire on which the tire monitor is arranged by analyzing the signals provided by each tire monitor.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein there are at least three antennas arranged on the vehicle.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tire monitors are SAW-based sensors.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle is a truck and at least two tires are arranged as a group one next to the other, one of the antennas being arranged between or adjacent the tires of this group.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle is a truck and at least four tires are arranged in two rows of two tires one next to the other, a first one of the antennas being arranged between or adjacent the tires of one row of the group, a second one of the antennas being arranged between or adjacent the tires of another row of the group and a third one of the antennas being arranged inward of all the tires of the group.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining the location of each tire monitor comprises determining a distance between each antenna and the tire monitor on its associated tires.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining the location of each tire monitor comprises determining a direction between each antenna and the tire monitor on its associated tires.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining the location of each tire monitor comprises analyzing the time of arrival of the signals from the tire monitors or analyzing the phase difference between arrival of the signals from the tire monitors.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing each antenna with processing circuitry to process the signals received from the tire monitors; and

supplying energy to power the processing circuitry of the antennas from the interrogator.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tire monitors are battery-operated or boosted sensors and the tires are arranged in multiple groups on opposite sides of the vehicle, further comprising:

arranging the antennas in a central region of the vehicle between the groups of the tires.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising grouping the tires into a plurality of operating groups, each of the antennas being associated with a respective one of the tire groups, analysis of the signals comprising determining a difference between transmission and reception times of signals from each antenna to each of the tires in its associated group of tires, and determining an average difference between the transmission and reception times of signals from each antenna to each of the tires in its associated group of tires, the location of each tire in each group being determined based on variations in the average differences between the transmission and reception times of signals from each antenna to the tires in its associated group of tires.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising providing a mechanism to separate the signals being sent from the tire monitors.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the mechanism is an addressable radio-frequency identification device (RFID) arranged in connection with each tire monitor, further comprising forming the initiation signals such that each initiation signal addresses only a single RFID.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein each tire monitor includes an antenna, a measuring device and a radio-frequency identification device (RFID) switch arranged between the antenna and the measuring device, further comprising forming the initiation signals to individually allow each RFID switch to open and close and provide for individual transmissions of signals from the tire monitors when the RFID switch is either open or closed.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising controlling the interrogator to learn the identification of the RFID switches.

16. A method for obtaining information about a plurality of tires on a single vehicle, comprising:

arranging a tire monitor on each of the plurality of tires to provide signals containing information about one or more properties of the tire on which the tire monitor is arranged;

arranging an interrogator on the vehicle to transmit initiation signals to cause the tire monitors to provide their signals;

arranging at least one antenna on the vehicle and coupling each of the at least one antenna to the interrogator, each of the at least one antenna being associated with a portion of the plurality of tires and spaced different distances from the tire monitors on the associated tires;

wirelessly transmitting initiation signals from the interrogator to each of the tire monitors through the at least one antenna to cause each tire monitor to provide signals containing information about one or more properties of the tire on which the tire monitor is arranged;

directing the signals from the tire monitors to the interrogator via the at least one antenna; and

determining a location of each tire monitor and thus a location of a tire on which the tire monitor is arranged by analyzing the signals provided by each tire monitor whereby the information provided by the tire monitors is thereby associatable with the tires.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the at least one antenna comprises a plurality of antennas spaced apart from one another, further comprising arranging each of the antennas between or adjacent the associated tires.
