Abstract

A process to manufacture an oilfield component including a base material and an age hardenable clad material comprises finish tempering the oilfield component at a selected time and at a selected temperature to temper the base material and age harden the clad material. A body of a ram blowout preventer comprises, a vertical bore through the body and a horizontal bore through the body intersecting the vertical bore, wherein the body is selectively reinforced with a clad material, and wherein the body is formed by a process comprising finish tempering at a selected time and at a selected temperature to temper the base material and age harden the clad material.

Claims (36)

1 . A process to manufacture an oilfield component comprising a base material and an age-hardenable clad material, the process comprising:

finish tempering the oilfield component at a selected time and at a selected temperature to temper the base material and age harden the clad material.

2 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the selected temperature is greater than a post-weld heat treatment temperature of the base material.

3 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the finish tempering comprises:

tempering the base material to develop required mechanical properties;

heat treating a heat-affected zone of a weldment between the base material and the clad material; and

age hardening the clad material.

4 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the base material comprises at least one of 4130 low-alloy steel, Grade F22 low-alloy steel, and Grade 8630 Modified low-alloy steel.

5 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the age hardenable material comprises at least one of INCONEL 725, Alloy 718, Alloy 625, and 17-4PH stainless steel.

6 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the selected temperature is between about 1200° F. and about 1300° F.

7 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the selected temperature is between about 1225° F. and about 1300° F.

8 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the selected temperature is between about 1215° F. and about 1225° F.

9 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the selected time is between 30 and 60 minutes per inch of Critical Section Thickness, plus between 1 and 2 hours.

10 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the selected time is between 30 and 45 minutes per inch of Critical Section Thickness, plus between 1 and 2 hours.

11 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the selected time is between 38 and 42 minutes per inch of Critical Section Thickness, plus about 1 hour.

12 . The process of claim 1 , wherein heat treating results in the clad material developing a yield strength of at least 115 ksi.

13 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the resulting base material of the oilfield component has a maximum Brinell hardness of 237.

14 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the oilfield component comprises at least one of a blowout preventer body, a stress joint, a valve body, and a sucker rod.

15 . The process of claim 1 , further comprising selectively heating the clad material such that the cladding material age-hardens and the base material remains at less that the tempering temperature.

16 . The process of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing the base material

snap tempering the provided base material;

selectively reinforcing the snap tempered base material with the clad material.

17 . The process of claim 16 , wherein the providing comprises at least one of forging, machining, hot isotactic pressing, and casting.

18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the base material is selectively rein forced based upon a finite element analysis.

19 . A ram blowout preventer manufactured using the process of claim 1 .

20 . A body of a ram blowout preventer, comprising:

a vertical bore through the body;

a horizontal bore through the body intersecting the vertical bore;

wherein the body is selectively reinforced with a clad material; and

wherein the body is formed by a process comprising finish tempering at a selected time and at a selected temperature to temper the base material and age harden the clad material.

21 . The body of the ram blowout preventer of claim 20 , wherein the body comprises at least one flange neck, wherein the at least one flange neck is selectively reinforced with the clad material.

22 . The body of the ram blowout preventer of claim 20 , wherein the body is selectively reinforced based upon a result of a finite element analysis.

23 . A process to manufacture an oilfield component, the process comprising:

selectively reinforcing a base material with an age-hardenable clad material; and

selectively heating the clad material such that it age-hardens and the base material remains at less that the tempering temperature.
