Abstract

Network resource management systems are provided. A representative network update manager includes an updater coupled to a persistent database and to an administrative application residing on an application server and a memory operable to store a plurality of delayed updates. The network update manager is preferably operable to receive at least one update from the administrative application and subsequently update the persistent database. Methods and other systems for network resource management are also provided.

Claims (56)

1. A method of routing a network request comprising:

providing a resource list to a user, the resource list identifying a plurality of resources on the network;

receiving, on a computer having a processor and memory, a request for status information for a resource listed in the resource list, the request accompanied by a class of service marker for the user;

checking the class of service marker to determine if the user has access rights for the resource identified in the request for status information;

updating the status of the resource to show a current status of the resource if the class of service marker provides access rights to the resource identified in the request for status information, otherwise, showing the status of the resource to be unavailable;

receiving a routing request for a resource identified in the resource list, the routing request being accompanied by the class of service marker for the user;

examining the class of service marker from the routing request against a network authorization policy to ensure that the class of service marker allows the user to be routed to the resource; and

routing the user to the resource if the class of service marker allows for the user to be routed to the resource.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

if the class of service marker is inadequate for routing the resource, providing a prompt querying the user to upgrade the class of service marker to a level that allows for routing to the resource.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

indicating that the resource identified in the request for status information is not present on the network to the user if the class of service marker does not allow the user to access the resource identified in the request for status information.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resource is physically present on the network, the method further comprising:

indicating that the resource is present on the network to a first user that has a class of service marker which allows the first user to access the resource, wherein the class of service marker accompanies a request for status information on the resource; and

indicating that the resource is not present on the network to a second user that has a class of service marker which prevents the second user from accessing the resource, wherein the class of service marker accompanies a request for status information on the resource.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resource comprises a connection socket.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a routing request for a resource not identified in the resource list, the routing request being accompanied by a class of service marker for the user;

examining the class of service marker from the routing request against the network authorization policy to ensure that the class of service marker allows the user to be routed to the resource not identified in the resource list; and

routing the user to the resource not identified in the resource list if the class of service marker allows the user to be routed to the resource not identified in the resource list.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

if the class of service marker is inadequate for routing to the resource, providing a prompt asking the user if the user would like to access the resource on a pay per use basis.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

displaying, in a graphical interface, as present those resources to which the user's class of service marker allows access; and

displaying, in the graphical interface, as not present those resources to which the user's class of service marker prohibits access.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

displaying, in a graphical interface, as present those resources to which the user's class of service marker allows access; and

prohibiting, in the graphical interface, displaying of those resources to which the user's class of service marker prohibits access.

10. A computer readable storage medium having a program for routing a network request, the program having instructions for performing:

providing a resource list to a user, the resource list identifying a plurality of resources on the network;

receiving a request for status information for a resource listed in the resource list, the request accompanied by a class of service marker for the user;

checking the class of service marker to determine if the user has access rights for the resource identified in the request for status information;

updating the status of the resource to show a current status of the resource if the class of service marker provides access rights to the resource identified in the request for status information, otherwise, showing the status of the resource to be unavailable;

receiving a routing request for a resource identified in the resource list, the routing request being accompanied by the class of service marker for the user;

examining the class of service marker from the routing request against a network authorization policy to ensure that the class of service marker allows the user to be routed to the resource; and

routing the user to the resource if the class of service marker allows for the user to be routed to the resource.

11. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , the program further performing:

if the class of service marker is inadequate for routing to the resource, providing a prompt querying the user to upgrade the class of service marker to a level that allows for routing to the resource.

12. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , the program further performing:

indicating that the resource identified in the request for status information is not present on the network to the user if the class of service marker does not allow the user to access the resource identified in the request for status information.

13. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the resource is physically present on the network, the program further performing:

indicating that the resource is present on the network to a first user that has a class of service marker which allows the first user to access the resource, wherein the class of service marker accompanies a request for status information on the resource; and

indicating that the resource is not present on the network to a second user that has a class of service marker which prevents the second user from accessing the resource, wherein the class of service marker accompanies a request for status information on the resource.

14. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the resource comprises a connection socket.

15. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , the program further performing:

receiving a routing request for a resource not identified in the resource list, the routing request being accompanied by a class of service marker for the user;

examining the class of service marker from the routing request against the network authorization policy to ensure that the class of service marker allows the user to be routed to the resource not identified in the resource list; and

routing the user to the resource if the class of service marker allows the user to be routed to the resource not identified in the resource list.

16. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , the program further performing:

if the class of service marker is inadequate for routing to the resource, providing a prompt asking the user if the user would like to access the resource on a pay per use basis.

17. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , the program further performing:

displaying, in a graphical interface, as present those resources to which the user's class of service marker allows access; and

displaying, in the graphical interface, as not present those resources to which the user's class of service marker prohibits access.

18. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , the program further performing:

displaying, in a graphical interface, as present those resources to which the user's class of service marker allows access; and

prohibiting, in the graphical interface, displaying of those resources to which the user's class of service marker prohibits access.
