Abstract

A method for reducing optical distortion within an optical system employing adaptive optics, includes modifying phase of a wavefront of the optical system with a wavefront coding element. Image data of the optical system is post-processed to remove phase effects induced by the wavefront coding element, to reduce optical distortion caused by the adaptive optics and associated with one or more of quilting, stuck actuator and piston error.

Claims (17)

1. A method for reducing optical distortion within an optical system employing adaptive optics, comprising:

modifying phase of a wavefront of the optical system with a wavefront coding element; and

post-processing image data of the optical system to remove phase effects induced by the wavefront coding element, to reduce optical distortion caused by the adaptive optics and associated with one or more of quilting, stuck actuator and piston error.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying comprises altering the phase such that no zeroes exist in a modulated transfer function of the optical system for spatial frequencies of the image data.

3. A method for reducing error within an optical system employing adaptive optics for generating image data, the method comprising:

modifying phase of a wavefront of electromagnetic energy within the optical system; and

post-processing the image data to remove phase effects induced by modifying phase, to reduce error caused by the adaptive optics and associated with at least one of quilting, stuck actuator and piston error.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein modifying comprises altering the phase such that no zeros exist in a modulated transfer function of the optical system, for spatial frequencies of the image data.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein modifying comprises utilizing a wavefront coding element at at least one of a principal plane of the optical system, an image of a principal plane of the optical system, an aperture stop of the optical system, and an image of the aperture stop.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the optical system includes at least one image forming optics, and wherein modifying the phase includes integrating the wavefront coding element with the at least one image forming optics.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein modifying the phase further includes combining the image forming optics and the wavefront coding element into a single optical element.

8. The method of claim 3 , wherein post-processing comprises removing the phase effects to form a final image that is substantially free of the error caused by the adaptive optics.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the error caused by the adaptive optics comprises at least one of misfocus, spherical aberration, astigmatism, field curvature, chromatic aberration, temperature induced misfocus aberration, pressure induced misfocus aberration, trefoil and coma.

10. The method of claim 3 , wherein modifying comprises altering the phase to account for focus-related aberrations defined by Zernike polynomials.

11. The method of claim 3 , post-processing comprises increasing a modulation transfer function to a system specified level.

12. The method of claim 3 , wherein post-processing varies over time to continually produce a final image while the error also varies over time.

13. The method of claim 3 , wherein modifying comprises altering the wavefront such that a modulation transfer function remains substantially constant regardless of error associated with at least one of quilting, stuck actuator and piston error.
