Abstract

Vehicle seat including a seat portion including a container having an interior containing fluid and a mechanism, material or structure therein to restrict flow of the fluid from one portion of the interior to another portion of the interior, a back portion arranged at an angle to the seat portion, and a measurement system arranged to obtain an indication of the weight of the occupant when present on the seat portion based at least in part on the pressure of the fluid in the container. The weight of the occupant can be used to control components in the vehicle or the seat itself.

Claims (31)

1. A seat for a vehicle, comprising:

a seat portion adapted to support an occupant, said seat portion including a bladder having a fluid-containing interior,

a back portion coupled to and arranged at an angle to said seat portion;

a mounting structure for mounting said seat portion to a floor pan of the vehicle; and

a measurement system associated with said bladder and arranged to obtain an indication of the weight of the occupant when present on said seat portion based at least in part on the pressure of the fluid in said bladder.

2. The seat of claim 1 , wherein said measurement system comprises at least one transducer for measuring the pressure of the fluid in said bladder.

3. The seat of claim 1 , wherein said bladder includes structure arranged in said interior for constraining fluid flow within said interior.

4. The seat of claim 3 , wherein said constraining structure comprises open cell foam.

5. The seat of claim 1 , wherein the fluid in said interior of said bladder is a liquid or gel and said bladder includes a plurality of individual chambers.

6. The seat of claim 5 , wherein said measurement system comprises a transducer arranged in connection with each of said chambers.

7. A system for controlling a component in the vehicle which interacts with or is interacted by the occupant of the seat, comprising:

the seat of claim 1 ;

an adjustment device arranged to adjust the component based on occupancy of the seat; and

a processor coupled to said measurement system and to said adjustment device and arranged to determine an adjustment of the component to be provided by said adjustment device based on the indication of the weight of the occupant of the seat provided by said measurement system, and direct said adjustment device to adjust the component in accordance with the determination.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the fluid in said interior of said bladder is a liquid or gel and the component is a headrest and said adjustment device is a motor arranged to move the headrest.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the fluid in said interior of said bladder is a liquid or gel and the component is situated apart from the seat.

10. The seat of claim 1 , wherein said bladder includes open cell foam.

11. The seat of claim 1 , wherein said seat portion includes said bladder and another container.

12. The seat of claim 11 , wherein said seat portion includes an orifice between said bladder and said another container.

13. The seat of claim 12 , wherein said orifice has an adjustable size.

14. The seat of claim 13 , further comprising a control circuit arranged to control the amount of opening of said orifice.

15. The seat of claim 1 , wherein said measurement system comprises at least one transducer.

16. The seat of claim 1 , wherein said measurement system comprises a transducer arranged in connection with said bladder.

17. The system of claim 7 , wherein the component is a stiffness adjustment system for adjusting stiffness of said seat portion.

18. The system of claim 7 , wherein the system is constructed to enable the occupant to change the adjustment of the component provided by said processor.

19. A system for controlling a component in the vehicle which interacts with or is acted upon by the occupant of the seat, comprising:

the seat of claim 1 ;

an adjustment device arranged to adjust the component based on occupancy of the seat; and

a processor coupled to said adjustment device and arranged to determine an adjustment of the component to be provided by said adjustment device based on occupancy of said seat portion and direct said adjustment device to adjust the component in accordance with the determination.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the component is a headrest of the seat and said adjustment device is at least one motor arranged to move the headrest.

21. The system of claim 19 , wherein the system is constructed to enable the occupant to change the adjustment of the component provided by said processor.
