Abstract

A generating facility is provided for generating electricity from both solar and non-solar energy sources. The solar generating portion of the facility includes capability to directly generate electricity from solar insolation, or to store the solar energy in a tangible medium, including stored heat, or solar generating fuel. The generating facility is configured to generate electricity simultaneously from both solar and non-solar sources, as well a solely from immediate solar insolation and from solar energy stored in a tangible medium. Additionally, the solar generating capacity may be segregated; such that separate spectra of solar insolation are used to capture heat for steam turbine based electrical generation, capture light energy for photovoltaic based electrical generation, and to grow biomass to generate a solar fuel.

Claims (20)

1. An apparatus for producing electricity, comprising:

a solar facility having a solar generator for storing energy from solar insolation in tangible form;

and

a combustion-based generating facility coupled to said solar generator and constructed to use energy from said solar insolation stored in tangible form to produce electricity therewith;

wherein said solar generator includes a solar field configured to capture heat energy from the solar insolation; and

said solar field is selectively coupled to a first steam turbine generator to use at least a portion of said captured heat energy to generate electricity with said first steam turbine generator and to a solar energy storage for storing at least a portion of said captured heat energy for use by the combustion-based generating facility in generating electricity with a second steam turbine generator.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the combustion-based generating facility includes:

a fossil fuel fired steam generator coupled to the second steam turbine generator, the fossil fuel fired steam generator being configured to generate heat energy from a fossil fuel source; and

a controller for selectively directing the heat energy to said second steam turbine generator from at least one of said fossil fuel fired steam generator or from said solar energy storage to generate electricity therewith.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said solar generator includes a field for growing a biomass.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein said biomass is a solar fuel.

5. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein a solar fuel is derived from said biomass.

6. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein said combustion-based generating facility includes an exhaust stream, and

selected portions of said exhaust stream are supplied to said biomass.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein a separator is coupled to said exhaust stream, and at least carbon dioxide is recovered from said exhaust stream for reuse with said biomass.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein a separator is coupled to said exhaust stream, and at least water is recovered from said exhaust stream for reuse with said biomass.

9. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said controller selectively couples said solar energy storage to said second steam turbine generator based upon a demand for power during peak generating periods.

10. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said controller selectively couples said solar energy storage to said second steam turbine generator based upon a demand for power during off-peak generating periods.

11. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the solar energy storage stores energy in the form of heat.

12. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said solar energy storage is a buffer tank constructed to store at least an amount of heat transfer fluid heated in the solar field by solar insolation such that the second steam turbine generator can produce electricity from the heat energy stored in the buffer tank for a predetermined period of time without heat energy from the fossil fuel fired steam generator.
