Abstract

A patch application device wherein the patch is retained in position within the collar until delivery through contact of at least one obstruction inside the collar with a portion of an adhesive on the front surface (e.g., microneedle-containing surface) of the patch. The collar and patch can be used to form separate replaceable cartridges, and the combination can be provided as a kit.

Claims (46)

1 . A patch application device comprising:

a collar comprising an inner and outer surface, wherein at least one obstruction extends from the inner surface, and wherein the collar further comprises a proximal end and a distal end;

a patch within the collar comprising a distal-facing surface wherein at least a portion of the distal-facing surface comprises an adhesive, which adheres the patch to at least one obstruction;

an applicator adjacent to the proximal end of the collar, the applicator comprising:

a first stored position wherein at least a portion of the distal-facing surface of the patch is protected from external contact;

a second released position wherein the patch is released from contact with the at least one obstruction in the collar and expelled from the collar; and

a drive mechanism wherein the patch is forcibly expelled toward the distal end of the collar.

2 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein the adhesive comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive.

3 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein the patch comprises a microneedle array and backing.

4 - 7 . (canceled)

8 . A device according to claim 3 , wherein at least one microneedle comprises a height above a first major surface and a maximum base dimension, the height and the maximum base dimension ratio defining an aspect ratio, wherein the aspect ratio is 2:1 or more.

9 . A device according to claim 3 , wherein at least one microneedle is formed of one or more polymers.

10 - 11 . (canceled)

12 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein the piston has a mass of about 2 grams or less.

13 - 14 . (canceled)

15 . A device according to claim 1 , wherein at least one obstruction is coated with a release coating.

16 . A cartridge for use with an applicator in a patch application device comprising:

a collar comprising:

an inner and outer surface, wherein at least one obstruction extends from the inner surface;

a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end of the collar is configured such that it may be attached and detached from an patch applicator device;

a patch within the collar comprising a distal-facing surface wherein at least a portion of the distal-facing surface of the patch comprises an adhesive, which adheres the patch to at least one obstruction, and wherein the patch may be released from contact with at least one obstruction and expelled from the collar.

17 . A cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the patch comprises a microneedle array and backing.

18 . A cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the adhesive comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive.

19 - 22 . (canceled)

23 . A cartridge according to claim 17 , wherein at least one microneedle comprises a height above a first major surface and a maximum base dimension, the height and the maximum base dimension ratio defining an aspect ratio, wherein the aspect ratio is 2:1 or more.

24 . A cartridge according to claim 17 , wherein at least one microneedle is formed of one or more polymers.

25 . A cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the outer and inner surface of the collar are coated with a release coating.

26 . A cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the inner surface is coated with a release coating.

27 . A cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein at least one obstruction is coated with a release coating.

28 . A patch application kit comprising:

at least one cartridge comprising:

a collar comprising;

an inner and outer surface, wherein at least one obstruction extends from the inner surface;

a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end of the collar is configured such that it may be attached and detached from an patch applicator device;

a patch within the collar comprising a distal-facing surface wherein at least a portion of the distal-facing surface of the patch comprises an adhesive, which adheres the patch to at least one obstruction;

an applicator having a first stored position, a second released position, a drive mechanism wherein the patch is forcibly expelled toward the distal end of the collar;

instructions for attaching and detaching the collar from the applicator;

instructions for engaging the applicator from the first stored to the second released position and thereby applying the patch to a target surface; and

packaging material to protect the applicator and at least one cartridge from contamination.

29 . A method of applying a patch comprising:

placing the distal end of the collar of a device according to claim 1 in contact with a target surface;

engaging the device to its second released position, such that the patch is expelled from the collar and attached to the target surface; and

removing the device from the target surface.

30 . A method according to claim 29 , wherein the drive mechanism includes a piston.

31 . A method according to claim 29 , wherein the patch is driven at a minimum velocity of 4 meters per second or more.

32 . A device according to claim 29 , wherein the patch is driven at a maximum velocity of 10 meters per second or less.
