Abstract

A method of controlling fouling in a membrane filtration system ( 5 ) of the type where gas is used to clean or scour the membranes ( 6 ) wherein the method includes supplying the gas to the system with a continuously variable flow rate. A continuously variable valve arrangement ( 17 ) is also disclosed.

Claims (22)

1. A method of controlling fouling in a membrane filtration system having at least one membrane extending between a lower header comprising a plurality of openings and an upper header, the method comprising:

providing a source of a gas;

controlling delivery of the gas to the membrane filtration system at a continuously variable flow rate comprising one of a sinusoidal and triangular wave flow pattern;

passing the gas at the continuously variable flow rate through at least one inlet pipe to the plurality of openings in the lower header; and

contacting the at least one membrane with the gas at the continuously variable flow rate to produce a stable transmembrane pressure over time.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the continuously variable gas flow rate ranges from about zero m 3 per hour to about 12 m 3 per hour.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein controlling delivery of the gas provides a sinusoidal flow rate pattern through the at least one inlet pipe.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein controlling the delivery of the gas provides a triangular wave flow pattern through the at least one inlet pipe.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising simultaneously increasing the gas flow rate through a first inlet pipe to a first membrane module and decreasing the flow rate of gas through a second inlet pipe to a second membrane module.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein controlling the delivery of the gas to the membrane filtration system at a continuously variable flow rate comprises simultaneously opening a first outlet of a valve and closing a second outlet of the valve.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a period of time between a maximum flow rate and a minimum flow rate is less than five seconds.

8. A membrane filtration system comprising:

at least one membrane extending between a lower header comprising a plurality of openings and an upper header;

a source of a gas; and

a flow control device comprising at least one of a rotating valve and a variable speed blower to provide the gas at a continuously variable flow rate comprising one of a sinusoidal and a triangular wave flow rate pattern, and the flow control device fluidly connected to the lower header to allow the gas to pass through the plurality of openings in the lower header at the continuously variable flow rate and contact the at least one membrane;

the flow control device being programmed or operable such that the gas flow produces a stable transmembrane pressure over time.

9. The membrane filtration system according to claim 8 , wherein the flow control device fluidly connects to the source of the gas.

10. The membrane filtration system according to claim 8 , wherein the rotating valve comprises a housing having an inlet port, at least one outlet port, and a movable valve member for providing a continuously variable flow from the inlet port to the at least one outlet port.

11. The membrane filtration system according to claim 10 , further comprising a motor operatively coupled to the movable valve member.

12. The membrane filtration system according to claim 10 , wherein the housing comprises a plurality of inlet ports.

13. The membrane filtration system according to claim 8 , wherein the rotating valve is constructed and arranged to fully open a first outlet port when a second outlet port is fully closed.

14. The system according to claim 8 , further comprising a chamber located proximate the lower header and constructed and arranged to receive the gas from the flow control device and deliver the gas to the at least one membrane through the plurality of openings in the lower header.
