Abstract

A heater that includes a substantially flat layer of electrical resistance material having a first end and a second end, a first electrical conductor electrically connected to the first end of the substantially flat layer of electrical resistance material, a second electrical conductor electrically connected to the second end of the substantially flat layer of electrical resistance material, and an electrically insulating material surrounding the substantially flat layer of electrical resistance material and electrically insulating the first end of the substantially flat layer of electrical resistance material from the second end of the substantially flat layer of electrical resistance material. The heater may be mounted to a surface of a fluid component and used to heat the fluid component, and where the heater includes an aperture that extends through the electrically insulating material, the heater may be placed between a fluid component and a fluid substrate and used to heat both.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising acts of:

placing a substantially flat heater between a bottom surface of a fluid component and a top surface of a fluid substrate, the bottom surface of the fluid component and the top surface of the fluid substrate each having at least one port through which a fluid can flow; and

securing the fluid component to the fluid substrate with the substantially flat heater therebetween.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substantially flat heater includes a pair of electrical conductors, the method further comprising acts of:

connecting the pair of electrical conductors to a source of power.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the act of connecting includes an act of removably connecting the pair of electrical conductors to the source of power.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising an act of:

limiting a temperature of the substantially flat heater to within ±5° C. of a predetermined temperature.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the substantially flat heater is a first substantially flat heater, the fluid component is a first fluid component, the fluid substrate is a first fluid substrate, and the pair of electrical conductors is a first pair of electrical conductors, the method further comprising acts of:

placing a second substantially flat heater between a bottom surface of a second fluid component and a top surface of a second fluid substrate, the second substantially flat heater including a second pair of electrical conductors;

securing the second fluid component to the second fluid substrate with the second substantially flat heater therebetween;

connecting the second pair of electrical conductors to the same source of power as the first pair of electrical conductors;

maintaining a first temperature of the first substantially flat heater; and

maintaining a second temperature of the second substantially flat heater that is different than the first temperature.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the substantially flat heater is a first substantially flat heater, the fluid component is a first fluid component, the fluid substrate is a first fluid substrate, and the pair of electrical conductors is a first pair of electrical conductors, the method further comprising acts of:

placing a second substantially flat heater in thermal contact with one of a second fluid component and a second fluid substrate, the second substantially flat heater including a second pair of electrical conductors;

connecting the second pair of electrical conductors to the same source of power as the first pair of electrical conductors;

maintaining a first temperature of the first substantially flat heater; and

maintaining a second temperature of the second substantially flat heater that is different than the first temperature.

7. A method comprising acts of:

placing a substantially flat heater between a bottom surface of a fluid component and a top surface of a fluid substrate; and

securing the fluid component to the fluid substrate with the substantially flat heater therebetween;

wherein the bottom surface of the fluid component and the top surface of the fluid substrate each includes at least one port through which fluid may flow, and wherein the substantially flat heater includes at least one aperture, the method further comprising an act of:

retaining a seal within the at least one aperture of the substantially flat heater.

8. A method comprising acts of:

placing a substantially flat heater between a bottom surface of a fluid component and a top surface of a fluid substrate; and

securing the fluid component to the fluid substrate with the substantially flat heater therebetween;

wherein the bottom surface of the fluid component and the top surface of the fluid substrate each includes at least one port through which fluid may flow, wherein the substantially flat heater includes at least one aperture, and wherein the act of securing the fluid component to the fluid substrate includes an act of:

forming a fluid-tight seal between the at least one port in the bottom surface of the fluid component and the at least one port in the top surface of the fluid substrate using a portion of the substantially flat heater that surrounds the at least one aperture.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an act of:

retaining the heater on the bottom surface of the fluid component.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the act of securing includes an act of using a plurality of fasteners to secure the fluid component to the fluid substrate with the substantially flat heater therebetween, the method further comprising an act of:

retaining the heater on the bottom surface of the fluid component using the plurality of fasteners.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the heater includes at least one aperture through which the fluid may flow, the method further comprising an act of:

aligning the at least one aperture of the heater with the at least one port in the bottom surface of the fluid component and the at least one port in the top surface of the fluid substrate.
