Abstract

A method and system for combining requests for data bandwidth by a data source for transmission of data over a wireless communication medium is provided. A central node receives one or more bandwidths requests from one or more data sources via wireless communication. A scheduler then combines one or more bandwidths requests from the same data source to create a single data burst bandwidth. The central node then grants the data burst bandwidth to the appropriate data source via wireless communication.

Claims (9)

1. A wireless point-to-multipoint system for combining requests for bandwidth by a data source for transmission of data over a wireless network, comprising: a central node; and a scheduler coupled to the central node; wherein the scheduler receives bandwidth requests from one or more data sources, each bandwidth request having a data source identifier, a priority identifier, and an amount of required bandwidth, wherein the scheduler schedules each of the bandwidth requests in an order to be serviced based on the priority identifier associated with each bandwidth request and an order in which each bandwidth request was received, wherein the scheduler combines the amount of required bandwidth specified by each of the scheduled bandwidth requests having the same data source identifier into a data burst bandwidth, and wherein the central node grants each data burst bandwidth to a respective data source over the wireless network.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the order to be serviced is determined by servicing bandwidth requests having a higher priority identifier before bandwidth requests having a lower priority identifier and servicing bandwidth requests having the same priority identifier according to the order in which the bandwidth requests were received.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the scheduler combines the amount of required bandwidth specified by each of the scheduled bandwidth requests having the same data source identifier but having different priority identifiers.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the scheduler stores each of the bandwidth requests in a data structure so as to maintain the order in which the bandwidth requests were received.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the data structure is comprised of one or more queues.

6. A wireless system for combining requests for bandwidth by a data source for transmission of data over a wireless network, comprising: a central node; and a scheduler coupled to the central node; wherein the scheduler receives bandwidth requests from one or more data sources, each bandwidth request having a data source identifier, a priority identifier, and an amount of required bandwidth, wherein the scheduler combines the amount of required bandwidth specified by each of the bandwidth requests having the same data source identifier and priority identifier into a data burst bandwidth, and wherein the scheduler schedules a granting of each data burst bandwidth based on one or more quality of service parameters.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the quality of service parameters include at least one of efficiency of transmission and transfer delay tolerance.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the scheduler also schedules the granting of each data burst bandwidth based on at least one of a priority identifier associated with a bandwidth request or an order in which a bandwidth request was received.

9. A wireless system for combining requests for bandwidth by a data source for transmission of data over a wireless network, comprising: one or more data sources; and a central node that receives bandwidth requests from the one or more data sources, each bandwidth request having a data source identifier, a priority identifier and an amount of required bandwidth; wherein the central node combines the amount of required bandwidth specified by each of the bandwidth requests having the same data source identifier into a data burst bandwidth and grants each data burst bandwidth to respective ones of the one or more data sources over a wireless network.
