Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions and methods for altering cell function. In particular, the present invention provides compositions comprising selenium (e.g., SEL-PLEX) and methods of using the same (e.g., as a therapeutic and/or prophylactic treatment for neurodegenerative disease). Additionally, the present invention demonstrates that specific forms of selenium (e.g., SEL-PLEX) possess the ability to alter expression of genes associated with disease and/or aging while other forms of selenium (e.g., selenomethionine) do not.

Claims (7)

1. A method of upregulating expression of Neurogenin 3 in a selenium-deficient subject comprising:

orally administering an effective amount of a composition comprising a dried, nonviable selenium-enriched yeast wherein the total selenium content of said yeast comprises two percent or less inorganic selenium to said subject, wherein the effective amount is an amount that upregulates expression of Neurogenin 3 in said subject as compared to an untreated subject.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising characterizing the expression level of Neurogenin 3 in said subject both prior to and subsequent to administering the composition.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising characterizing the expression level of Neurogenin 3 in said subject prior to administering the composition.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising characterizing the expression level of Neurogenin 3 in said subject subsequent to administering the composition.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount of the composition comprises administering to the subject between about 50 μg to about 5000 μg of selenium per day.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein administering the composition comprises administering to the subject about 200 μg to about 500 μg selenium per day.
