Abstract

An active matrix liquid crystal display device is provided, in which an after image remaining after removing an application of a direct current voltage is suppressed. The active matrix liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal molecule having negative dielectric anisotropy and a dopant having a dissociative group.

Claims (18)

1. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device comprising:

a pair of substrates with liquid crystal layer there between;

a plurality of common voltage signal lines and a plurality of drain signal lines which crossing each other formed on one of the pair of substrates;

a semiconductor layer formed above a forming layer of the common voltage signal lines and under a forming layer of the drain signal lines;

a pixel electrode formed in each pixel region on the one of the pair of substrates and electrically connected to one of the drain signal lines;

wherein the semiconductor layer has parallel edges and slant edges with respect to said one of the drain signal lines, and edges of the pixel electrode facing toward neighboring edges of the semiconductor layer in a crossing region where said one of the drain signal lines crossing with one of the common voltage signal lines are shaped substantially conforming with the neighboring edges of the semiconductor layer to minimize change of distance between the semiconductor layer and the pixel electrode.

2. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the semiconductor layer has two slant portions defined between two pairs of said slant edges to be narrower gradually when extending away from the crossing region where said one of the drain signal lines crossing with said one of the common voltage signal lines.

3. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein the edges of the pixel electrode next to the semiconductor layer is parallel to the neighboring edges of the semiconductor layer.

4. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 3 , wherein said one of the common voltage signal lines is narrower in the crossing region with said one of the drain signal lines than in a region overlapping with the pixel electrode.

5. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 4 , further comprising a counter electrode connected to said one of the common voltage signal lines, wherein the pixel electrode overlaps the counter electrode with an insulating layer sandwiched therebetween.

6. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 5 , wherein the pixel electrode has at least two forming regions, which define a non forming region therebetween, between every two neighboring drain signal lines of the drain signal lines in the direction perpendicular to the drain signal lines.

7. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 6 , wherein the counter electrode is formed in both the forming regions and the non forming region of the pixel electrode.

8. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 7 , wherein the counter electrode and the pixel electrode are made of a transparent conducting material.

9. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein said one of the common voltage signal lines is narrower in the crossing region with said one of the drain signal lines than in a region overlapping with the pixel electrode.

10. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 9 , further comprising a counter electrode connected to said one of the common voltage signal lines, wherein the pixel electrode overlaps the counter electrode with an insulating layer sandwiched therebetween.

11. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 10 , wherein the pixel electrode has at least two forming regions, which define a non forming region therebetween, between every two neighboring drain signal lines of the drain signal lines in the direction perpendicular to the drain signal lines.

12. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 11 , wherein the counter electrode is formed in both the forming regions and the non forming region of the pixel electrode.

13. An active matrix type liquid crystal display device according to claim 12 , wherein the counter electrode and the pixel electrode are made of a transparent conducting material.
