Claims (63)

1 . A system for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said system including:

an e-mail application; and

an e-mail attachment management application, wherein said e-mail attachment management application is installed into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application,

wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows a user to compress an outgoing e-mail attachment.

2 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail application is Microsoft Outlook.

3 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail attachment management application is configurable to automatically compress said attachment.

4 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail attachment management application detects whether an attachment has already been compressed before compressing the attachment.

5 . The system of claim 4 wherein said e-mail attachment management application does not compress said attachment if said attachment has already been compressed.

6 . The system of claim 1 wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows said user to compress said attachment using one of a plurality of available compression options.

7 . The system of claim 6 wherein said plurality of compression options include .zip compression options.

8 . The system of claim 6 wherein said plurality of compression options include a Deflate compression option.

9 . The system of claim 8 wherein said plurality of compression options include a first Deflate compression option operating at a first compression level and a second Deflate compression option operating at a second compression level, wherein said first compression level is different from said second compression level.

10 . The system of claim 6 wherein said plurality of compression options include a DCL Implode compression option.

11 . The system of claim 10 wherein said plurality of compression options include a first DCL Implode compression option operating at a first dictionary byte size and a second DCL Implode compression option operating at a second dictionary byte size, wherein said first dictionary byte size is different from said second dictionary byte size.

12 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail attachment management application allows said user to encrypt said attachment to said outgoing e-mail.

13 . The system of claim 12 wherein said e-mail attachment management application is configurable to automatically encrypt said attachment.

14 . The system of claim 12 wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows said user to encrypt said attachment using one of a plurality of user-selectable encryption options.

15 . The system of claim 14 wherein said plurality of encryption options include an asymmetric encryption option.

16 . The system of claim 15 wherein said asymmetric encryption option uses a public key.

17 . The system of claim 16 wherein said public key uses the X.509 format.

18 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail attachment management application allows said user to digitally sign said attachment.

19 . The system of claim 18 wherein said attachment is digitally signed using a PKI based digital signature.

20 . The system of claim 18 wherein said attachment is digitally signed using an X.509 based certificate.

20 . A method for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said method including:

providing an e-mail application;

providing a graphical user interface using said e-mail application;

providing an e-mail attachment management application;

installing said e-mail attachment management application into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application; and

using said enhanced version of said e-mail attachment management application to compress an attachment to an outgoing e-mail using said graphical user interface.

21 . A system for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said system including:

an e-mail application; and

an e-mail attachment management application, wherein said e-mail attachment management application is installed into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application,

wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows a user to compress an outgoing e-mail attachment using one of a plurality of available compression options.

22 . A method for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said method including:

providing an e-mail application

providing a graphical user interface using said e-mail application;

providing an e-mail attachment management application;

installing said e-mail attachment management application into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application, wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application includes a plurality of available compression options;

idenfitying an outgoing e-mail having an attachment; and

selecting one of said plurality of available compression options to apply to said attachment.

23 . A system for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said system including:

an e-mail application;

an e-mail attachment management application, wherein said e-mail attachment management application is installed into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application,

wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows a user to compress an outgoing e-mail attachment using one of a plurality of available compression options,

wherein said outgoing e-mail attachment is associated with a file type,

wherein said one of a plurality of available compression options is automatically selected based on said file type.

24 . A method for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said method including:

providing an e-mail application

providing a graphical user interface using said e-mail application;

providing an e-mail attachment management application;

installing said e-mail attachment management application into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application, wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application includes a plurality of compression options;

identifying an outgoing e-mail having an attachment wherein said attachment is associated with a file type; and

automatically selecting one of said plurality of compression options to apply to said attachment based on said file type.

25 . A system for encrypting an outgoing e-mail attachment, said system including:

an e-mail application;

an e-mail attachment management application, wherein said e-mail attachment management application is installed into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application,
