Systems and methods for manipulating and managing computer archive files
A computer program for managing and manipulating archive zip files of a computer. The program includes a system and method for opening, creating, and modifying, and extracting zip archive files. The program is fully integrated into Microsoft Windows Explorer and is accessed via Explorer menus, toolbars, and/or drag and drop operations. An important feature of the program is the archive manager which may be used to open a zip file, create a new zip file, extract zip files, modify zip files, etc. The program is integrated into Microsoft Windows Explorer using the shell name space extension application program interface developed by Microsoft.
1 . A system for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said system including:
an e-mail application; and
an e-mail attachment management application, wherein said e-mail attachment management application is installed into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application,
wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows a user to compress an outgoing e-mail attachment.
2 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail application is Microsoft Outlook.
3 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail attachment management application is configurable to automatically compress said attachment.
4 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail attachment management application detects whether an attachment has already been compressed before compressing the attachment.
5 . The system of claim 4 wherein said e-mail attachment management application does not compress said attachment if said attachment has already been compressed.
6 . The system of claim 1 wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows said user to compress said attachment using one of a plurality of available compression options.
7 . The system of claim 6 wherein said plurality of compression options include .zip compression options.
8 . The system of claim 6 wherein said plurality of compression options include a Deflate compression option.
9 . The system of claim 8 wherein said plurality of compression options include a first Deflate compression option operating at a first compression level and a second Deflate compression option operating at a second compression level, wherein said first compression level is different from said second compression level.
10 . The system of claim 6 wherein said plurality of compression options include a DCL Implode compression option.
11 . The system of claim 10 wherein said plurality of compression options include a first DCL Implode compression option operating at a first dictionary byte size and a second DCL Implode compression option operating at a second dictionary byte size, wherein said first dictionary byte size is different from said second dictionary byte size.
12 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail attachment management application allows said user to encrypt said attachment to said outgoing e-mail.
13 . The system of claim 12 wherein said e-mail attachment management application is configurable to automatically encrypt said attachment.
14 . The system of claim 12 wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows said user to encrypt said attachment using one of a plurality of user-selectable encryption options.
15 . The system of claim 14 wherein said plurality of encryption options include an asymmetric encryption option.
16 . The system of claim 15 wherein said asymmetric encryption option uses a public key.
17 . The system of claim 16 wherein said public key uses the X.509 format.
18 . The system of claim 1 wherein said e-mail attachment management application allows said user to digitally sign said attachment.
19 . The system of claim 18 wherein said attachment is digitally signed using a PKI based digital signature.
20 . The system of claim 18 wherein said attachment is digitally signed using an X.509 based certificate.
20 . A method for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said method including:
providing an e-mail application;
providing a graphical user interface using said e-mail application;
providing an e-mail attachment management application;
installing said e-mail attachment management application into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application; and
using said enhanced version of said e-mail attachment management application to compress an attachment to an outgoing e-mail using said graphical user interface.
21 . A system for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said system including:
an e-mail application; and
an e-mail attachment management application, wherein said e-mail attachment management application is installed into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application,
wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows a user to compress an outgoing e-mail attachment using one of a plurality of available compression options.
22 . A method for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said method including:
providing an e-mail application
providing a graphical user interface using said e-mail application;
providing an e-mail attachment management application;
installing said e-mail attachment management application into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application, wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application includes a plurality of available compression options;
idenfitying an outgoing e-mail having an attachment; and
selecting one of said plurality of available compression options to apply to said attachment.
23 . A system for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said system including:
an e-mail application;
an e-mail attachment management application, wherein said e-mail attachment management application is installed into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application,
wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows a user to compress an outgoing e-mail attachment using one of a plurality of available compression options,
wherein said outgoing e-mail attachment is associated with a file type,
wherein said one of a plurality of available compression options is automatically selected based on said file type.
24 . A method for compressing an outgoing e-mail attachment, said method including:
providing an e-mail application
providing a graphical user interface using said e-mail application;
providing an e-mail attachment management application;
installing said e-mail attachment management application into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application, wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application includes a plurality of compression options;
identifying an outgoing e-mail having an attachment wherein said attachment is associated with a file type; and
automatically selecting one of said plurality of compression options to apply to said attachment based on said file type.
25 . A system for encrypting an outgoing e-mail attachment, said system including:
an e-mail application;
an e-mail attachment management application, wherein said e-mail attachment management application is installed into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application,
wherein said enhanced version of said e-mail application allows a user to encrypt an outgoing e-mail attachment.
26 . A method for encrypting an outgoing e-mail attachment, said method including:
providing an e-mail application;
providing a graphical user interface using said e-mail application;
providing an e-mail attachment management application;
installing said e-mail attachment management application into said e-mail application to form an enhanced version of said e-mail application; and
using said enhanced version of said e-mail attachment management application to encrypt an attachment to an outgoing e-mail using said graphical user interface.
