Abstract

Certain embodiments of the present invention provide a system for improved data communications within a remote sensor system. The system includes a sensor node. The sensor node is adapted to generate data based at least in part on a detected event. The sensor node is adapted to communicate the data based at least in part on a rule. Certain embodiments of the present invention provide a method for improved data communications within a remote sensor system. The method includes detecting an event, generating data based at least in part on the event, processing the data based at least in part on a rule, and communicating the data when the rule satisfied.

1. A system for data communications, the system comprising:

a gateway node;

a control center node; and

a plurality of sensor nodes, each sensor node configured to

generate data based upon a detected event,

if a sensor transmission rule is satisfied, communicate the data to said gateway node, and

if the sensor transmission rule is not satisfied, perform at least one of hold the data and drop the data;

said gateway node configured to transmit the data to the control center node based upon whether a gateway transmission rule is satisfied, the gateway transmission rule comprising satisfaction of the sensor transmission rule with at least some of said plurality of sensor nodes.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each sensor node includes at least one of a seismic detector, an acoustic detector, a magnetic detector, and a passive infra-red detector.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detected event includes at least one of vehicle activity and personnel activity.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor transmission rule is configurable by a user.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor transmission rule is configurable remotely.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein each sensor node is configured to receive the sensor transmission rule from the control center node.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein each sensor node is configured to generate the data based upon a plurality of detected events.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the gateway node is configured to perform at least one of hold the data, and drop the data, if the gateway transmission rule is not satisfied.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the gateway node is configured to receive the data from said plurality of sensor nodes.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the gateway node is configured to receive the gateway transmission rule from the control center node.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control center node is configured to communicate at least one of the sensor transmission rule to each sensor node, and the gateway transmission rule to the gateway node.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of sensor nodes is at a sensor layer.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein said gateway node comprises a plurality thereof; and wherein the control center node is configured to receive data from at least one of said plurality of sensor nodes and said plurality of gateway nodes.

14. A method for data communications within a remote sensor system, the method including:

operating at least one processing device at each of a plurality of sensor nodes to perform at least:

detecting an event;

generating data based upon the detected event;

processing the data based upon a sensor transmission rule that determines whether to communicate the data;

if the sensor transmission rule is satisfied, communicating the data to a gateway node; and

if the sensor transmission rule is not satisfied, at least one of hold the data and drop the data; and

operating the gateway node to transmit the data to a control center node based upon whether a gateway transmission rule is satisfied, the gateway transmission rule comprising satisfaction of the sensor transmission rule with at least some of the plurality of sensor nodes.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein each sensor node includes at least one of a seismic detector, an acoustic detector, a magnetic detector, and a passive infra-red detector.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the sensor transmission rule is configurable by a user.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the sensor transmission rule is remotely configurable.

18. The method of claim 14 further comprising at least one of dropping the data, and holding the data, if the gateway transmission rule is not satisfied.

19. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium encoded with a set of instructions for execution on a computer, the set of instructions comprising:

a detection routine configured to detect an event and generate data based upon the detected event;

a processing routine configured to process the data based upon a sensor transmission rule that determines whether to communicate the data;

a communication routine configured to communicate the data from a plurality of sensor nodes to a gateway node if the sensor transmission rule is satisfied;

a hold/drop routine configured to perform at least one of hold the data and drop the data if the sensor transmission rule is not satisfied; and

a transmission routine configured to transmit the data received at the gateway node from a respective sensor node to a control center node if a gateway transmission rule is satisfied, the gateway transmission rule comprising satisfaction of the sensor transmission rule with at least some of the plurality of sensor nodes.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the detection routine is configured to detect the event using at least one of a seismic detector, an acoustic detector, a magnetic detector, and a passive infra-red detector.

21. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the sensor transmission rule is configurable by a user.

22. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the sensor transmission rule is remotely configurable.

23. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , further comprising at least one of a drop routine for dropping the data, and a hold routine for holding the data, if the gateway transmission rule is not satisfied.

24. A system for data communications, the system comprising:

a gateway node;
