Abstract

Power measurement and control in transmission systems are affected by changes in load conditions. A method and system are provided for detecting and controlling power levels independent of such load conditions.

Claims (41)

1. A device for power detection, comprising:

a waveguide for transporting forward and reflected waves of a signal with a corresponding wavelength and a power level, the waveguide having a pair of slots spaced apart by a quarter of the wavelength;

a quarter wavelength delay component;

a power combiner;

a detector diode; and

a pair of probes protruding into the waveguide through the pair of slots for probing the signal and measuring its power level, wherein the pair of probes, the quarter wavelength delay component, the power combiner and the detector diode are configured such that the forward waves converge at the power combiner constructively and the reflected waves converge at the power combiner destructively.

2. The device for power detection as in claim 1 , wherein the measured power level is substantially independent from load condition variations.

3. A device for power detection, comprising:

a pair of members detachably joined to form a body with a duct, wherein the duct defines waveguide for transporting forward and reflected waves of a signal with a corresponding wavelength and a power level, the waveguide having a pair of slots spaced apart by a quarter of the wavelength;

a quarter wavelength delay component;

a power combiner;

a detector diode; and

a pair of probes protruding into the waveguide through the pair of slots for probing the signal and measuring its power level, wherein the pair of probes, the quarter wavelength delay component, the power combiner and the detector diode are configured such that the forward waves converge at the power combiner constructively and the reflected waves converge at the power combiner destructively.

4. The device for power detection as in claim 3 , wherein the measured power level is substantially independent from load condition variations.

5. A power detection and control loop in a transmission system, comprising:

a waveguide interposed between an output stage and a load of a transmission system, the output stage operative to produce a signal with a corresponding wavelength and a power level that is controllable and the waveguide operative to transport forward and reflected waves of the signal, the waveguide having a pair of slots spaced apart by a quarter of the wavelength; and

a detector circuit for measuring the power level of the signal, the detector circuit having a pair of probes, a quarter wavelength delay component, a power combiner, and a detector diode,

wherein the pair of probes protrudes into the waveguide through the pair of slots for probing the signal and measuring its power level, the measured power level being used to control the signal, and

wherein the pair of probes, the quarter wavelength delay component, the power combiner and the detector diode are configured such that the forward waves converge at the power combiner constructively and the reflected waves converge at the power combiner destructively.

6. The power detection and control loop in a transmission system as in claim 5 , wherein the measured power level is substantially independent from load condition variations.

The power detection and control loop in a transmission system as in claims 5 , further comprising a control circuit having a buffer amplifier linked to stages responsive to the measured power level and operatively linked to the output stage for controlling its gain and, in turn, the power level of the signal.

8. The device as recited in claim 1 wherein said waveguide has opposed ends, with said pair of slots being disposed spaced apart from said opposed ends.

9. The device as recited in claim 1 wherein said waveguide has opposed ends, with one of which defines an input, with a load being positioned at the remaining opposed end, opposite to said input.

10. The device as recited in claim 9 wherein said load is an antenna.

11. The device as recited in claim 1 wherein said waveguide has a rectangular cross-section.

12. The device as recited in claim 1 wherein one of said pair of slots is disposed between said input and the remaining slot of said pair of slots, with one of said pair of probes extending from said one of said pair of slots being connected to said quarter wave delay component.

13. The device as recited in claim 1 wherein each of said pair of probes are connected to one of two inputs of said combiner.

14. The device as recited in claim 3 wherein said waveguide has opposed ends, with said pair of slots being disposed spaced apart from said opposed ends.

15. The device as recited in claim 3 wherein said waveguide has opposed ends, with one of which defines an input, with a load being positioned at the remaining opposed end, opposite to said input.

16. The device as recited in claim 15 wherein said load is an antenna.

17. The device as recited in claim 3 wherein said waveguide has a rectangular cross-section.

18. The device as recited in claim 3 wherein one of said pair of slots is disposed between said input and the remaining slot of said pair of slots, with one of said pair of probes extending from said one of said pair of slots being connected to said quarter wave delay component.

19. A device for power detection, comprising:

a body defining a waveguide having opposed ends, one of which has a load disposed thereat, with a pair of apertures being present in said body and positioned between said opposed ends, said waveguide having dimensions to facilitate the propagation of signal waves between said opposed ends and having a wavelength and a power level associated therewith;

a pair of probes, each of which extends through one of said pair of apertures, with the aperture through which one of said pair of probes extends being different from the aperture of said pair of apertures through which the remaining probe of said pair of probes extend;

a power combiner having first and second inputs and an output;

a delay component connected between one of said pair of probes and said first input, with the remaining probe being connected to said second input and said pair or apertures being spaced-apart a distance equivalent to a quarter of said wavelength, with said remaining probe extending through one of said pair of apertures positioned between said load and said remaining aperture of said pair of apertures, said delay component providing a propagation delay equivalent to a quarter of said wavelength; and

a detector diode in electrical communication with said output.

The device as cited in claim 19 wherein said signal waves include forward waves propagating toward said load and reflected waves propagating away from said load, with said pair of probes, said delay component, said power combiner and said detector diode are configured such that said forward waves converge at the power combiner constructively and said reflected waves converge at the power combiner destructivety.

21. The device as recited in claim 19 wherein said load is an antenna.

22. The device as recited in claim 19 wherein said waveguide has a rectangular cross-section.
