Abstract

Systems and methods for automatically generating a playlist of series assets and systems and methods for grouping assets of a playlist in clusters are provided. In one embodiment, series assets may automatically be included into a playlist for that series. In another embodiment, an interactive media guidance application may group assets in clusters based on one or more user selected parameters or may group assets in cluster based on automatically determined parameters. In yet another embodiment, the interactive media guidance application may group assets in clusters and display at least one identifier in connection with each cluster to indicate a basis for forming the cluster. The identifier may be a key word or catch phrase that succinctly identifies a trait or characteristic of assets in a particular cluster associated with the identifier.

Claims (78)

1 . A method for using an interactive media guidance application, the method comprising:

creating a playlist from a list of assets, wherein the assets are arranged in a predetermined order;

grouping the assets into at least two clusters as a function of at least one parameter; and

displaying the playlist having the at least two clusters of assets.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising

displaying, with respect to at least one of the clusters, an identifier associated with that one of the clusters.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the identifier is iconic or graphic.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the identifier is textual.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the identifier is representative of attributes common to the assets within that one of the clusters.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the identifier is an element of the class of elements represented by the parameter.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the grouping the assets is a function of at least two parameters, wherein at least one of the at least two clusters comprises two subclusters.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein a first of the at least two parameters is a primary parameter and the second of the two parameters is a secondary parameter, wherein the primary parameter is associated with the assets of both subclusters and the secondary parameter is associated with just one of the subclusters.

9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising

displaying an identifier associated with at least one of the subclusters.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting a subset of the clusters for playback.

11 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

automatically selecting the at least one parameter.

12 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing an option for a user to select the at least one parameter.

13 . The method or claim 1 , further comprising:

allowing the user to choose between specifying the at least one parameter or allowing the application to automatically select the at least one parameter.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the relative order of the steps of creating the playlist and grouping the assets is user determinable.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one parameter is automatically generated via an algorithmic analysis of attributes of the assets.

17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the algorithmic analysis comprises a frequency analysis of the attributes.

18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the attributes of the assets comprise genre.

19 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the attributes of the asset comprise artists.

20 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the attributes of the assets comprise the asset type or quality.

21 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

allowing a user to designate whether an asset clustering parameter is a primary or secondary parameter.

22 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the assets are associated with identifiers, and wherein a user can select one of the identifiers as a parameter in one of the interactive asset grouping nodes.

23 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining identifiers that are associated with the assets, wherein at least one of the identifiers is selected to be the at least one parameter.

24 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the assets are series recorded assets.

25 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the assets are selected from the group consisting of VOD assets, linear assets, bookmark assets, audio assets, or any combination thereof.

26 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the list of assets comprises a proper subset of the sum of assets of all of the clusters, the method further comprising selecting the list of assets from the at least two clusters.

27 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the list of assets is the group of assets within at least one of the at least two clusters.

28 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least two clusters can be rearranged relative to each other and played in sequence.

29 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the list of assets is selected remotely from where the step of displaying the playlist is executed.

30 . A system for using an interactive media guidance application, the system comprising user equipment operative to:

create a playlist from a list of assets, wherein the assets are arranged in a predetermined order;

group the assets into at least two clusters as a function of at least one parameter; and

display the playlist having the at least two clusters of assets.

31 . The system of claim 30 , the user equipment operative to:

display, with respect to at least one of the clusters, an identifier associated with that one of the clusters.

32 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the identifier is iconic or graphic.

33 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the identifier is textual.

34 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the identifier is representative of attributes common to the assets within that one of the clusters.

35 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the identifier is an element of the class of elements represented by the parameter.

36 . The system of claim 30 , the user equipment operative to group the assets is a function of at least two parameters, wherein at least one of the at least two clusters comprises two subclusters.

37 . The system of claim 36 , wherein a first of the at least two parameters is a primary parameter and the second of the two parameters is a secondary parameter, wherein the primary parameter is associated with the assets of both subclusters and the secondary parameter is associated with just one of the subclusters.

38 . The system of claim 37 , the user equipment operative to:

display an identifier associated with at least one of the subclusters.

39 . The system of claim 30 , the user equipment operative to:

select a subset of the clusters for playback.

40 . The system of claim 30 , the user equipment operative to:

automatically select the at least one parameter.

41 . The system of claim 30 , the user equipment operative to:

provide an option for a user to select the at least one parameter.

42 . The system of claim 30 , the user equipment operative to:

allow the user to choose between specifying the at least one parameter or allow the application to automatically select the at least one parameter.

43 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the relative order in which the playlist is created and the assets are grouped is user determinable.
