Abstract

A wireless mobile communication device includes a first processor configured to execute a software application and a second processor configured to manage wireless communication over a wireless network. The processors are located in the same communication device and configured for one of the processors to send data to the other processor under a protocol. In accordance with this protocol, if the sending processor does not receive a receipt acknowledgement for the sent data from the other processor before the end of a resend time period measured from when the data was sent, then the sending processor resends the data to the other processor after the end of the resend time period. However, the sending processor does receive the acknowledgement before the end of the resend time period, then the sending processor does not resend the data to the other processor.

Claims (35)

1. A wireless communication device, comprising:

a network platform processor configured to communicate with a processor-specific wireless communication network using a device platform processor that is not compliant with the processor-specific wireless communication network and a network platform processor that is configured to communicate with the processor-specific wireless communication network;

a device platform processor configured to execute operating system software for the wireless communication device;

electronic messaging software stored on a non-transitory computer-readable medium and executable by the device platform processor to create and receive electronic messages to be transmitted over the processor-specific wireless communication network;

a communication link that couples the network platform processor to the device platform processor; and

the device platform processor being configured to transmit control data over the communication link to the network platform processor for controlling operation of the network platform processor, the device platform processor being further configured to transmit electronic messages over the communication link for transmission by the network platform processor over the processor-specific communication network;

using a first communication protocol to transmit control data over a communication link from the device platform processor to the network platform processor, the control data being used to control operation of the network platform processor, the first communication protocol employing packet sequence numbers and acknowledgements to ensure reliable transmission; and

using a second communication protocol to transmit the messages over the communication link from the device platform processor to the network platform processor for transmission over the processor-specific communication network, the messages being transmitted over the communication link using a second communication protocol without packet sequence numbers or acknowledgements.

2. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the second communication protocol is also used by the network platform processor for transmitting the electronic messages over the processor-specific communication network.

3. The wireless communication device of claim 2 , wherein the second communication protocol is UDP/IP.

4. The wireless communication device of claim 3 , wherein the processor-specific communication network is an iDEN network.

5. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the communication link is a serial link.

6. A method of transmitting electronic messages over a processor-specific wireless communication network using a device platform processor that is not compliant with the processor-specific wireless communication network and a network platform processor that is configured to communicate with the processor-specific wireless communication network, comprising:

executing electronic messaging software using the device platform processor to generate electronic messages to be transmitted over the processor-specific wireless communication network;

using a first communication protocol to transmit control data over a communication link from the device platform processor to the network platform processor, the control data being used to control operation of the network platform processor, the first communication protocol employing packet sequence numbers and acknowledgements to ensure reliable transmission; and

using a second communication protocol to transmit the messages over the communication link from the device platform processor to the network platform processor for transmission over the processor-specific communication network, the messages being transmitted over the communication link using the second communication protocol without packet sequence numbers or acknowledgements.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

using the second communication protocol to transmit the messages over the processor-specific communication network.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second communication protocol is UDP/IP.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the processor-specific communication network is an iDEN network.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the communication link is a serial link.

11. The method of claim 6 , wherein the device platform processor executes the functionality of a calendar application.

12. The method of claim 6 , wherein the network platform processor interfaces with a speaker and a microphone used for voice communication over the network.

13. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

providing, by a transceiver, text data to the device platform processor;

storing, by the network platform processor, the text data in a memory; and

forwarding, by the network platform processor, the text data to the device platform processor over the communication link.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

receiving, by the device platform processor, the text data from the network platform processor; and

outputting, by the device platform processor, the text to a display.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

interfacing, by the device platform processor, with a keyboard for inputting a text message;

sending, by the device platform processor, the text message over the communication link to the network platform processor;

sending, by the network platform processor, the text message to a transceiver; and

transmitting, by the transceiver, the text message over the network.
