Abstract

Oral care treatments are provided, including multi-component oral care compositions and methods for delivering such compositions to the oral cavity. Oral care devices and systems for implementing such oral care treatments are also provided.

Claims (71)

1 . A method of oral care comprising:

(a) during a first oral care session, delivering a first composition from a dispensing oral care device to the oral cavity of a user; and

(b) during a second oral care session, at a later time than the first oral care session, delivering a second composition from the oral care device to the oral cavity of the user.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the oral care device comprises a power toothbrush and the method further comprises contacting the teeth with a moving head portion of the power toothbrush during delivery of each composition.

3 . The method of claim 1 further comprising monitoring the total volume of at least one of the compositions that is delivered, and using this information to determine whether to deliver an additional dosage of the composition during a subsequent oral care session.

4 . The method of claim 1 further comprising delivering, in addition to the second composition, the first composition during the second oral care session.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the compositions is delivered in a metered, predetermined dosage.

6 . An oral care system comprising a handle,

a neck extending from the handle,

extending from the handle neck, a head having an upper portion carrying a plurality of cleaning elements and defining an outlet for fluid delivery from the head,

a fluid passageway configured to deliver two or more components to the outlet,

a delivery device configured to pump the components from a source through the passageway to the outlet; and

a controller, configured to control operation of the delivery device.

7 . The oral care system of claim 6 wherein the delivery device comprises two or more pumps.

8 . The oral care system of claim 6 wherein the controller is configured to independently control the operation of the individual pumps.

9 . The oral care system of claim 6 wherein the controller includes a clock function.

10 . The oral care system of claim 6 wherein the controller is configured to be programmed to provide a counting function.

11 . The oral care system of claim 6 wherein the controller comprises a microprocessor.

12 . An oral care system comprising two components, wherein the first component comprises a copper ion or a precursor thereof; and the second component comprises a chlorite ion or a precursor thereof, and wherein the first and second components are configured in two separate containers.

13 . The oral care system of claim 12 wherein the two separate containers are in a single oral care device.

14 . The oral care system of claim 12 wherein the first component is substantially free of chlorite ion or a precursor thereof.

15 . The oral care system of claim 12 wherein the second component is substantially free of copper ion or a precursor thereof.

16 . The oral care system of claim 12 wherein the second component has a molar excess of a chlorite ion or precursor thereof relative to copper ion or precursor thereof.

17 . A method of administering an oral care composition comprising administering a first component comprising a copper ion or a precursor thereof; and administering a second component comprising a chlorite ion or a precursor thereof;

wherein the first and second component combine form a composition in the mouth of a user or combine just prior to administration in the mouth of a user.

18 . The method of claim 17 wherein the first and second components are administered simultaneously.

19 . An oral care method, comprising:

an oral care device comprising:

a first compartment and a first component stored within the first compartment, wherein the first component comprises a stannous salt;

a second compartment and a second component stored within the second compartment, wherein the second component comprises a peroxide source; and dispensing the second component after the first component.

20 . The oral care method of claim 19 , wherein the oral care device further comprises a first outlet in fluid communication with the first compartment and a second outlet in fluid fluid communication with the second outlet.

21 . The oral care method of claim 20 , wherein the oral care device further comprises a first pump associated with the first outlet and a second pump associated with the second outlet, wherein the first pump is used to pump the first component and the second pump is used to pump the second component.

22 . An oral care method comprising:

an oral care device comprising:

a first compartment and a first component stored within the first compartment, wherein the first component comprises a stannous salt;

a second compartment and a second component stored within the second compartment, wherein the second component comprises a chlorite source; and

dispensing the second component after the first component.

23 . An oral care method comprising:

an oral care device comprising:

a first compartment and a first component stored within the first compartment, wherein the first component comprises a stannous salt;

a second compartment and a second component stored within th second compartment, wherein the second component comprises a polyphosphate; and

dispensing the second component after the first component.

24 . An oral care method comprising:

an oral care device comprising:

a first compartment and a first component stored within the first compartment, wherein the first component comprises a stannous salt;

a second compartment and a second component stored within th second compartment, wherein the second component comprises a comprises a peroxide source and a quaternary ammonium compound; and

dispensing the second component after the first component.

25 . An oral care method comprising:

an oral care device comprising:

a first compartment and a first component stored within the first compartment, wherein the first component comprises a metal catalyst;

a second compartment and a second component stored within th second compartment, wherein the second component comprises a comprises a peroxide source; and

dispensing the second component after the first component.

26 . An oral care method comprising:

an oral care device comprising:

a first compartment and a first component stored within the first compartment, wherein the first component comprises a fluoride source and wherein the first component has a pH between about 2 and about 7;

a second compartment and a second component stored within th second compartment, wherein the second component has a pH greater than about 7; and

dispensing the second component after the first component.

27 . An oral care method comprising:

an oral care device comprising:

a first compartment and a first component stored within the first compartment, wherein the first component comprises a calcium source;

a second compartment and a second component stored within the second compartment, wherein the second component comprises a phosphate; and

dispensing the second component after the first component.

28 . The oral care method of claim 27 , wherein the oral care device is in the form of a package.

29 . An oral care method comprising:

a first oral care device comprising a first compartment storing a first dentifrice, wherein the first dentifrice comprises a stannous salt;

a second oral care device comprising a second compartment storing a second dentifrice comprising a peroxide source;

dispensing the first dentifrice onto a toothbrush;

brushing with the first dentifrice;

dispensing the second dentifrice onto the toothbrush after brushing with the first dentifrice;

brushing with the second dentifrice; and

wherein the second dentifrice is dispensed onto the toothbrush within about 5 minutes of dispensing the first dentifrice onto the toothbrush.
