Abstract

Exemplary embodiments provide automated nuclear fission reactors and methods for their operation. Exemplary embodiments and aspects include, without limitation, re-use of nuclear fission fuel, alternate fuels and fuel geometries, modular fuel cores, fast fluid cooling, variable burn-up, programmable nuclear thermostats, fast flux irradiation, temperature-driven surface area/volume ratio neutron absorption, low coolant temperature cores, refueling, and the like.

Claims (100)

1 . A method of operating a nuclear fission reactor, the method comprising:

burning in a fast neutron spectrum nuclear fission reactor at least one previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly that is retained in first cladding in which the nuclear fission fuel assembly was previously burned.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly includes a uranium nuclear fission fuel assembly.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the uranium includes enriched uranium.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly was previously burned in a light water reactor.

5 . A method, comprising:

inserting into a burning region of a fast neutron spectrum nuclear fission reactor at least one previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly that is retained in first cladding in which the enriched uranium nuclear fission fuel assembly was previously burned; and

initiating a propagating nuclear fission deflagration wave in the inserted at least one previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly includes a uranium nuclear fission fuel assembly.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the uranium includes enriched uranium.

8 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly was previously burned in a light water reactor.

9 . A nuclear fission reactor comprising:

a nuclear fission reactor core assembly having a burning region; and

a nuclear fission fuel assembly disposed in the burning region, the fuel assembly including:

a cladding structure; and

a quantity of previously-burned nuclear fission fuel at least partially contained within the cladding structure.

10 . The nuclear fission reactor of claim 9 , wherein the burning region is configured to initiate and propagate a nuclear fission deflagration wave.

11 . The nuclear fission reactor of claim 9 , wherein the cladding structure includes:

first cladding in which the nuclear fission fuel was previously burned; and

second cladding disposed around an exterior of the first cladding.

12 . The nuclear fission reactor of claim 11 , wherein the second cladding includes a plurality of cladding sections.

13 . The nuclear fission reactor of claim 9 , wherein the previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly includes a uranium nuclear fission fuel assembly.

14 . The nuclear fission reactor of claim 13 , wherein the uranium includes enriched uranium.

15 . The nuclear fission reactor of claim 14 , wherein the previously-burned nuclear fission fuel assembly was previously burned in a light water reactor.

16 . A nuclear fission fuel structure for propagating a nuclear fission deflagration wave, the nuclear fission fuel structure comprising:

a local nuclear fission ignition region; and

at least one contiguous segment of nuclear fission fuel material extending from the local ignition region in at least one direction, the segment being configured to propagate a nuclear fission deflagration wave through the segment from the local ignition region in the at least one direction, the segment having a noncylindrical shape.

17 . The nuclear fission fuel structure of claim 16 , wherein the noncylindrical shape includes a spherical shape.

18 . The nuclear fission fuel structure of claim 16 , wherein the noncylindrical shape includes a parallelepiped shape.

19 . The nuclear fission fuel structure of claim 16 , wherein the noncylindrical shape includes a toroidal shape.

20 . A nuclear fission fuel structure for propagating nuclear fission burning, the nuclear fission fuel structure comprising:

a local nuclear fission ignition region; and

a nuclear fission fuel structure extending from the local ignition region in at least one direction, the nuclear fission fuel structure containing a plurality of non-contiguous segments of nuclear fission fuel material.
