Abstract

An imaging device includes a plurality of photo-diodes that operate as optical pixels arranged in a plurality of columns on a single CMOS substrate. The outputs of the multiple pixel sensors, or photo-diodes, are examined to determine if a one pixel, or a region of pixels are in saturation. If so, then the pixel gain is adjusted to correct or compensate for the image distortion in the region. For example, the gain of the charging amplifier or operational amplifier can be adjusted to correct for saturation. This can be done in real-time since hardware is being tuned for the correction instead of software.

Claims (19)

1. A method of image processing, comprising:

receiving a first image of a scene using an array of pixel sensors, wherein each pixel sensor is used to generate a pixel, each pixel sensor having an operational amplifier that includes a compensation capacitor bank having at least one capacitor that can be selectively placed in a feedback path internal to the operational amplifier;

determining a region of saturation of the first image;

reconfiguring the compensation capacitor bank in at least one of the pixel sensors to correct for saturation; and

receiving a second image of the scene using the array of pixel sensors, wherein the second image is received after reconfiguring the compensation capacitor bank.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the pixel sensors includes a second compensation capacitor bank in a second feedback path external to the operational amplifier, further comprising reconfiguring the second compensation capacitor bank to correct for saturation.

3. A method of image processing, comprising:

receiving analog outputs from a plurality of pixel sensors, wherein the outputs correspond to pixels of an image, and wherein each pixel sensor has an operational amplifier that includes a compensation capacitor bank having at least one capacitor that can be selectively placed in a feedback path internal to the operational amplifier;

digitizing the outputs;

examining the intensity of the digitized outputs to determine a saturation region of the image; and

reconfiguring the compensation capacitor bank in at least one of the pixel sensors to correct for saturation.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising the step of receiving a second image of the scene using the plurality of pixel sensors, wherein the second image is received after reconfiguring the compensation capacitor bank.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the pixel sensors includes a second compensation capacitor bank in a second feedback path external to the operational amplifier, further comprising reconfiguring the second compensation capacitor bank to correct for saturation.

6. A method of image processing, comprising:

receiving an image of a scene using a plurality of pixel sensors used to generate pixels, each pixel sensor having an operational amplifier that includes a compensation capacitor bank having at least one capacitor that can be selectively placed in a feedback path internal to the operational amplifier;

determining a region of saturation of the image; and

reconfiguring the compensation capacitor bank in at least one of the pixel sensors to correct for saturation.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of receiving a second image of the scene using the plurality of pixel sensors, wherein the second image is received after reconfiguring the compensation capacitor bank.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein at least one of the pixel sensors includes a second compensation capacitor bank in a second feedback path external to the operational amplifier, further comprising reconfiguring the second compensation capacitor bank to correct for saturation.
