Abstract

A golf ball with aerodynamic coefficient magnitude and aerodynamic force angle, resulting in improved flight performance, such as increased carry and flight consistency regardless of ball orientation. In particular, the present invention is directed to a golf ball having increased flight distance as defined by a set of aerodynamic requirements at certain spin ratios and Reynolds Numbers, and more particularly the golf ball has a low lift coefficient at a high Reynolds Number.

Claims (18)

1 . A golf ball with a plurality of dimples having an aerodynamic coefficient magnitude defined by C mag =√(C L 2 +C D 2 ) and an aerodynamic force angle defined by Angle=tan −1 (C L /C D ), wherein C L is a lift coefficient and C D is a drag coefficient, and wherein C L is at least one of about 0.151 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.138 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 230000 and a spin ratio of about 0.085.

2 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein C D is at least one of about 0.222 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.219 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 230000 and a spin ratio of about 0.085.

3 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein C L is at least one of about 0.160 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.145 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 207000 and a spin ratio of about 0.095.

The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has at least one of a first aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of about 0.269 at a pole over pole orientation or a first aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of about 0.259 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 230000 and a spin ratio of about 0.085.

The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has at least one of a first aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of about 0.274 at a pole over pole orientation or a first aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of about 0.263 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 207000 and a spin ratio of about 0.095.

The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has at least one of a first aerodynamic force angle of about 34.3 at a pole over pole orientation or a first aerodynamic force angle of about 32.3 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 230000 and a spin ratio of about 0.085.

The golf ball of claim 6 , wherein the golf ball has at least one of a second aerodynamic force angle of about 35.6 at a pole over pole orientation or a second aerodynamic force angle of about 33.4 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 207000 and a spin ratio of about 0.095.

A golf ball with a plurality of dimples having an aerodynamic coefficient magnitude defined by C mag =√(C L 2 +C D 2 ) and an aerodynamic force angle defined by Angle=tan −1 (C L /C D ), wherein C L is a lift coefficient and C D is a drag coefficient, wherein C L is at least one of about 0.27 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.308 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 69000 and a spin ratio of about 0.284.

9 . The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein C L is at least one of about 0.28 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.253 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 92000 and a spin ratio of about 0.213.

10 . The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein C L is at least one of about 0.242 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.213 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 115000 and a spin ratio of about 0.17.

11 . The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein C D is at least one of about 0.308 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.337 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 69000 and a spin ratio of about 0.284.

12 . The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein the golf ball has a first aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of about 0.40 to about 0.45 at a Reynolds Number of about 69000 and a spin ratio of about 0.284.

13 . The golf ball of claim 12 , wherein the golf ball has a second aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of about 0.36 to about 0.40 at a Reynolds Number of about 92000 and a spin ratio of about 0.213.

A golf ball with a plurality of dimples having an aerodynamic coefficient magnitude defined by C mag =√(C L 2 +C D 2 ) and an aerodynamic force angle defined by Angle=tan −1 (C L /C D ), wherein C L is a lift coefficient and C D is a drag coefficient, and wherein C L is at least one of about 0.151 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.138 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 230000 and a spin ratio of about 0.085, and wherein the golf ball has a first aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of about 0.24 to about 0.27 at a Reynolds Number of about 230000 and a spin ratio of about 0.085.

15 . The golf ball of claim 14 , wherein the golf ball has a second aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of about 0.25 to about 0.28 at a Reynolds Number of about 207000 and a spin ratio of about 0.095.

16 . The golf ball of claim 14 , wherein C L is at least one of about 0.160 at a pole over pole orientation or about 0.145 at a poles horizontal orientation at a Reynolds Number of about 207000 and a spin ratio of about 0.095.

17 . The golf ball of claim 14 , wherein the golf ball has at least one of a first aerodynamic force angle of about 31 to about 35 at a Reynolds Number of about 230000 and a spin ratio of about 0.085.

18 . The golf ball of claim 17 , wherein the golf ball has at least one of a first aerodynamic force angle of about 34 to about 38 at a Reynolds Number of about 207000 and a spin ratio of about 0.095.
